What do you think about this amps tone? VH test

this guys amp sounds alot like the VH brown sound!

i was listening to this guys clips on this site and they are really good for a solid state.

the amp is a Crate GFX 212 SS.

crazy huh?

i dont think the guy can play Halen well but he has nailed the sound pretty much. i think that it is lacking a bit of saturation.

tell me what you guys think.

As annoying as he was to watch, he had/has the tone down, no doubt.

He said he was using a compressor....I wonder if the rest was just amp???

yeah LOL he was totally annoying to watch!!

he cant play halen well but yeah the tone is pretty down.
and from that solid state crate.

i think im gonna buy that amp.
i was fixing on getting a VHT or something but i think for the house and my pocket it wouldnt do the job.
for the VHT to sound great it has to be turned up a bit, and even if it does sound good low, i dont think it sounds THAT much better than the crate to spend over 2 grand to buy it.

so i might get the crate GFX.

the funny thing is to see the guy on the site try and play the solos!!
I hope that doesnt come off as being mean but i really wouldnt sell video lessons if i didnt know how to play the stuff awesome.
but thank god for the guy that opened my eyes to the tone of that amp. and how to get it.
he comes closer than most guys i have heard with great tube amps.

Hey Tone, FWIW....If you can find a TECH21 Trademark 60, I'm sure it's a much better amp than that particular Crate & the VH setting on it is very good.

And the other settings are very good at all levels. Can't really speak from experience on THAT Crate amp....

Ask Simon F to concur.....he currently has one & loves it.

The Super Compressor is better than the Dyna Comp because it has an extra knob??? LMFAO.... :smack:

The tone is almost there. Still too solid state sounding, a little buzzy, and too much reverb. He's in the ballpark but I've heard better.

it is just a bit buzzy, not really too much.

i think if there was a blindfold test you really wouldnt be able to tell.

put them side to side with the Halen songs to see.

Check the TECH21 site.....they have a ton of clips on there.

The last time I checked them, they re-did them....I liked the older ones better because they were separate clips, but the ones on there will give you a good taste.

His tone is pretty good though...

With enough effects, SS def can sound good "RECORDED" and in this case it's recorded...live...with the amp in your face..things sound different

Zakkly...things sound different recorded compared to your ears "live"...well..it actually MAY sound good live...but it wont sound the same..and 99% of the time SS records better than it sounds live...to me anyway...

There are some good SS amps though out there, don't get me wrong...that B52 head from Guitar Center is pretty impressive for SS, IMO.

The dude can play, and he's got great tone, and it's actually a VERY cool lesson...

tone isnt bad. suits his style and playing ability, which isnt that high. he also needs to get a metronome.

yeah, man i know the guy cant play well but i am not talking about that. i am talking specifically about the tone he is getting from that crate amp.


i think he gets super close to VH sound and from a SS amp

I agree... I used to have the same Crate amp and with his settings it does sound good, but there will always be a buzz you can't get rid of.
