You know what...*I'm* the TOOL. He's a bit annoying but my comment was totally uncalled for.

The dude can play, and he's got great tone, and it's actually a VERY cool lesson...

I'm crackin up here, cause my first reaction as well, was to make fun of this guy like he was the new uncool kid in 2nd grade class! I think what makes it so uncomfortable to watch is the fact that he never looks at the camera, almost like talking to someone with a floating eye! (no dis to anyone here with a "floater") But after you get past that, the site is pretty cool and the lessons very insightful, although not always accurate IMHO, but thats the whole idea of personal interperatation.

Anyways, this just goes to show that there are a zillion ways to get to the VH tone, and in this example, the guy is breaking ALL the rules. No ga-zillion dollar late 60's Plexi, no expensive boutique amp, no 8.5-ish paf, no dummy load, no wet/dry setup and no variac. Instead, a JB loaded Kramer through a solid state Crate! I borrowed this exact amp at a gig when my amp **** the bed right before showtime, and I hated it, so kudo's to JF for getting such a great tone from that thing.

I liked the tone, but I have to agree w/an earlier post that talked about ss sounding better recorded than live. I've recorded w/ss, and got a fine tone. I would use the same amp live, and it did not shine. It didn't sound horrible, but it was not cutting it, either.

i heard this amp at a local music store and was actually pretty impressed with the sound.
it definatly wasnt as good as a good tube amp but it was better than a few not so good tube amps.
played much better than a new marshall AVT.

to JonnyQ,

dude you are too funny.. that is exactly what i thought when i was looking at him. what freaks me out is he is real good at getting the tone. the frequencys are THERE for the VH tone but yes it is missing warmth , but just a bit. it is real good in my opinion.
try and put it on for someone without telling them what kind of amp it is. then see what they say.
