What do you think of this Air Norton idea?

Anyone ever try an Air Norton in the bridge of a semi-hollow? It's a typical 335 copy except all maple. I have an Air Norton I'm looking to do something with and this idea struck me today. It would be a classic rock/hard blues guitar.

What would be a good neck pickup for this setup?

To keep the Dimarzio theme going, you could try a PAF or Bluesbucker.

I don't like pickups any hotter than a Vintage spec in semi hollows...
I'd say a 36th anniversary PAF or a Humbucker from hell would work much better...

I can't stand the Air Norton in the bridge. I understand why people like it in the neck position, but I find it distant and ambiguous sounding in the bridge, with an awkward midrange spike. I do very much like the Norton in the bridge, so it's not that I don't like the coils. Having said all that, in a semi-hollow I think that neither the Norton nor Air Norton are the best choices. If you're sticking with Dimarzio I'd have to say the PAF type stuff, including the VHPAF and 36th anniversary. If you have to use the AN because you already own it, then same goes for the neck, just pair it with any of the PAF variants.

I have an Air Norton in the bridge of my Gibson Howard Roberts. I´m quite happy with it, the pickup has in that guitar an open sound, not so nasal, like some Dimarzios. It´s quite bright, though, probably because of the un-even coils. I mostly use it to blend in with the neck pickup for brighten up the sound. On high gain it can sound good alone, PAF-like, but then I put the TONE knob on 5-6. It has 12k, something, but it does not sound like a high gain pickup - quite clean, actually.

Thanks guys. I did want to use it just because I have it. I have a EJ Custom I might try to pair it with. I'm kind of crazy with odd combinations. Smetimes you strike gold!

adrian, is that Howard Roberts a semi?

Yes, it´s a semi-acoustic. Slightly smaller body compared to an ES 335, but also slightly thicker. Sounds perhaps more like a ES 175?
