Re: What Does Reverb Do?

Reverb simulates placing your amp in a big, reverberant, or echo-y space, like an empty parking garage.
A little bit of 'verb wets your sound, smooths it out, and helps with the sustain.

Re: What Does Reverb Do?

There's different types of it too: Spring, Hall, Plate, etc... Each one sounds slightly different than the other. Spring reverb is what you'll hear coming out of any amp with a reverb tank, although not all verb tanks are created equal. Vintage Fenders tend to have the best tube reverbs, altough you'll find a few exceptions to that (i.e. Mesa Blue Angel)

I like hall reverbs a lot. Big, crystal clear, defined reverb that sounds like your in a big cathedral and such. Its a very spacious, "out there" sound.

I'm not a big fan of plate reverb as it sounds too constricted and grainy for me but some people love it for adding lo-fi flavors.

Try out a pedal with some different types and see what you like. :smoker:

Re: What Does Reverb Do?

Thanks guys for the info, B2D that was really informative thanks man. i think alot fo amps have a reverb tank in them for reverb which is a nice touch. Ummm one mroe thing what is CHORUS? lol seriously i have no clue about effects in general.

Re: What Does Reverb Do?

Hey Strat_master; Imagine you have two people singing the exact same thing, in "chorus". They won't be exactly identical, and therefore, the slight differences cause a fatter, richer sound.

Chorus on a guitar takes the original signal, slightly alters the phase and pitch, and mixes that back in with the original. Thus creating the effect of two guitars playing almost the same thing.

But like any effect, be careful not to use too much. Not too long ago, I was listening to a guitarist at my favorite watering hole play an acoustic-electric. He had a fair amount of chorus dialed in. It sounded good, but during his break I mentioned that the chorus sounded nice.

He seemed annoyed that I knew what the effect was. ;)

You've never heard reverb?????

Amazing!

Just get yourself into a music store, plug into a Fender Super Reverb-Amp reissue and turn the reverb knob up to 3 or more.

All your questions will be answered!

The only reverb I really love and use is the built in Fender spring reverb in a blackface Fender amp like the Super, Deluxe, Twin or Vibrolux.

Re: What Does Reverb Do?

quencho, it's called a twin reverb

anyhoo, i don't use reverb for the kinda echoey effect - per se. I use it to fatten up my sound. I put the knob on about, oh 2 or so (out of 12) and it just makes everything really fat & full. After having those kinda results I'm not sure if i could ever play distorted without it, or even clean

as brian setzer once said, its not about how loud your amp is, it's about how big you can make it sound
