What genre are you?

All,

I heard something today that I hadn't heard in a while: Toad the Wet Sprocket "All I Want". True, not necessarily a popular song, but I noticed the way the lead guitarist was doing the electric guitar arpeggios chorus + delay. I was like "wow, that sounds like some of the stuff I do in church when it's not a loud song".

Anyone ever figure out who else they sound most like? I guess I sound most like Toad the Wet Sprocket, sort of.

Re: What genre are you?

In lead I sound like Satriani, Vai and Malmsteen when they were 1 year old.:laugh2:

Seriously...Some of my riffs are influenced by James Hetfield, some other by Whitesnake, others are a mix of ZZ Top-Talisman, others by Gamma Ray and so on.......

My leads are like "John Lee Hooker tries to shred".

Re: What genre are you?

My genre? I fit in best with rock / pop / blues stuff. My solos are heavily influenced by Mike McCready from Pearl Jam. A lot of the stuff I write is alternative sounding, very 90's-ish with the catchiness and melody of pop music. A co-worker calls my music "the most listenable pop he's ever heard. It's undeniably pop, but it has enough going on that it's not offensive".

My influences include Our Lady Peace, The Juliana Theory, Dishwalla, Stone Temple Pilots, Counting Crows, The Black Crowes, Pearl Jam, Splender, Foo Fighters, Goo Goo Dolls, Dashboard Confessional/Further Seems Forever.

Re: What genre are you?

This is all wishful thinking here, but here goes...

I hope that in chord progression-based songs, my rhythm playing is similar to Clapton's, simple yet gets the job done, but with some more different chords. I add some rhythmic solo fills to it sometimes a la Hendrix (they only sound good occassionally :fingersx: ) On riff songs I try to channel some Jimmy Page and Ritchie Blackmore in my rhythm playing. There's a bit of Townshend and Keith Richards power chord/triad/drone string stuff going on as well in all the rhythm playing.

Lead wise, I hope to be somewhere between Clapton, Rory Gallagher, Leslie West, and Jeff Beck. My leads are usually pentatonic based and I find I use a lot of Clapton and West style licks, with the melodic stylings following the latter and Gallagher. I do some Jeff Beck whammy bar stuff, and any tapping I do is usual minimal like Jeff Beck. My vibrato is either stinging and quick like Leslie West or slower and wider like Clapton or Gallagher. But once again, this is all wishful thinking :laugh2:

EDIT: I forgot to mention, its all that, but no where near as good as those mentioned above of course!

Ok, seriously I don't know. Everytime people ask me what type of music I play, I never know what to say. It's mostly punk/hardcore influenced so I guess punk/hardcore.

Re: What genre are you?

Melodic deathmetal with progressive/powermetal tendencies.

I'd like to think I sound like a blend of Opeth, Daylight Dies, and Swallow The Sun, but that's aiming pretty high.

Re: What genre are you?

i call my music Barbeque!I grill al your asses ,fry your ears ,and let a nice taste on your tongue after the song was consumed.

Re: What genre are you?

I'm a cross between Dave Mcpherson and Brian Molko..with a touch of Mick Ronson. But without his godly talent...

Re: What genre are you?

I listen to and inspired by too many geners... funk, blues, jazz, classic rock, a few shreders (mainly EVH and Paul Gilbert), classical, R&B... and I mainly play a pretty weird guitar (Gibson Nighthawk). So, I don't really sound like anyone... for good and worst.

The material I'm working on now is also just starting to focus, because we went from middle eastern riffs to bossa to grunge (not my first choices and I wrote half of it :smack:).

Guess I need to focus.
