What Guitar is better PRS SE or Gibson SG faded both are just under $600

Re: What Guitar is better PRS SE or Gibson SG faded both are just under $600

Usually the Gibson (46 out of 47 times, I'd take the Gibby), but I don't like the Fadeds. So I vote PRS.

Gibson, but I guess with the faded serious its come down to what you like your finish to feel like. I like them, and dont have a problem with the fadeds. but Id go gibson.

I had one of those faded SG's...but I sold it!!! :yell: With those faded series I would recommend playing a bunch of them first. Most I've played, including the one I owned, have sharp frets. You could get that taken care of though. The pickups are decent but you may want to change them.

I've never played one of those PRS SE's, but I would also recommend playing a few first.

Good luck!

I've played a few PRS SE's that have been pretty nice axes. I'd say that if you find a *nice* faded sg that *might* be the better playing/sounding guitar. Though quality isn't always consistent on the faded models.

I find I like the way the SE's balance a bit more on a strap though, never really gotten along too well with the SG's neck-heavy tendencies. Either way, both are nice axes.

I'd trust the SE more in a blind, ordering-off-the-internet scenario. If you're goin into a guitar store though, check em both out, see what you can find.

Re: What Guitar is better PRS SE or Gibson SG faded both are just under $600

You should not be asking us which one is better, you should be asking yourself first of all which guitar fits your needs best. They are very different guitars.

The SE will probably be more consistent, but there are certainly a ton of great Fadeds out there.

I know there are a lot of variances in SEs and much ado is made about the hit & miss quality of Gibbys.

Either one could be a wonderful guitar but inconsistency would dictate that you try before you buy. As a result, I wouldn't recommend buying either from an internet seller. To get a really good instance of either, you'll probably need to play a bunch of 'em.

Re: What Guitar is better PRS SE or Gibson SG faded both are just under $600

I've owned both and as much of a Gibson junkie as I am, I'd probably vote for the SE.

Re: What Guitar is better PRS SE or Gibson SG faded both are just under $600

go gibby. if you find a good one, you can only do better if you buy a used gibby. I see SG standards on ebay go for $700 on a blue moon, so with that as your guide you could consider some things like that

also consider buying a guitar with a damaged and repaired headstock - you could get a gibson lp standard for that price...

Re: What Guitar is better PRS SE or Gibson SG faded both are just under $600

go with the gibson sg.........I just can't stand the veener top. It just sounds cheap.

Re: What Guitar is better PRS SE or Gibson SG faded both are just under $600

Get the gibby, you'll be happier.

Re: What Guitar is better PRS SE or Gibson SG faded both are just under $600

Buy ME a faded SG and get yourself a PRS.

I know two guys now who are excellent guitarists that worked as techs at guitar stores. Both bought the PRS SE dual humbucker guitars do to their build, feel, weight and sound of the bridge (both said the neck was very useable, but would probably be changed out eventually - which hasn't happened yet.) The one said all of the switches, wireing, etc are the same as the high end PRSs.

Re: What Guitar is better PRS SE or Gibson SG faded both are just under $600

I've owned both (well, not a faded, but a regular special), and the Korean made SE (Soapbar SE 2) is far better than the American-made Gibson. The build quality and tuning stability of the SE puts the Gibson to shame.

I wonder if that is the reason I never like my Classisc plus top, the maple top looked great but the tone sucked and no pickup (out of the three I tried) ever changed that.

I take it the SG is a hunk of solid Mahogany, vs the PRS with the maple top. I think you have a good point, I wonder if PRS has a plane jane top, with no veener then that may be a better comparison.

+1 on that, I thought for sure you would have said PRS. Does PRS have a plane solid top no vaneer? I will have to check on that.

I own a 1980 LP Deluxe that I will never sell, I have a strat (may sell it) but I wan't either a SG or a PRS no maple veener top.

Re: What Guitar is better PRS SE or Gibson SG faded both are just under $600

I like Gibsons and PRS, and normally I'd choose Gibson over PRS, but not in this case. The PRS SE Custom is the best $500 guitar I've ever messed with. Some are setup better than others, and have more consistency in the grain on the veneer. Personally, I'd choose the SE Custom in transblack flame with stop tailpiece, then do a really good setup on it, with a perfectly cut nut, and maybe a little detail work on the frets......just to make it feel closer to a US model.

Re: What Guitar is better PRS SE or Gibson SG faded both are just under $600

Ok I know they are both good, but what guitar would you take and why?

PRS:
PRS

Gibson SG
SG

I am bais'ed to Gibson, as i LOVE almost all their guitars, and i really do not like PRS (any of them) as i find them to Bling for my taste !

I would go with the GIBBO ! :smokin:
(every time)

Re: What Guitar is better PRS SE or Gibson SG faded both are just under $600

Well I counted up the votes so far and the PRS is leading by one vote

PRS = 7 votes

SG = 6 votes

I should have started a poll on this!! Mybe a moderator can step in and set one up??

Two or three people did not say either way so they were nuteral.

PRS SE, ive played 3 or 4 different ones, all play nicely. They sound full and are pretty fun to play. Havent played those gibsons.. every time i go into a store i never pick them up. Love the look, but they always seem to disappoint me.
