What humbuckers have unequal windings?

The bridge slot of my 7 string is routed too close to the bridge for my taste and sounds harsh with my SH-5. I made a hybrid out of the junk factory pickups with the bridge slug coil and the neck screw coil. The difference between the coils was obviously too drastic, but it did the job well enough for me to know something like a C/59 hybrid would put me more in the ballpark i want to be.

What are some other medium output pups with unequal windings?

The guy at Dimarzio said i would like a Blaze neck pup in the bridge. How different are those coils?

I use it primarily for classic rock and blues, with the occasional prog metal.

Re: What humbuckers have unequal windings?

Not many will have. The Dimarzio lineup might have a dual resonance (or whatever they call it) model or two in that range of output. I don't think Duncan does any pickup with offset coils save for the c/59 (which is just 2 pickups)

Re: What humbuckers have unequal windings?

I don't know about other companies, but if you look at the specs of a pickup on Dimarzio's site and it says "patent: 4501185" then it's dual resonance pickup.

Re: What humbuckers have unequal windings?

I bet the Custom shop could whip one up. Maybe even shop floor if you just wanted something like a JB/Custom where they have easy access to the coils that are already wound for those. But don't quote me on that.

I tried calling her today, but no answer.

Re: What humbuckers have unequal windings?

What % of offset are you looking for? And what is the basis for the offset you want?

It looks like you're wanting a 7-string pickup. That really might be something to call in to talk to the actual pickup company and discuss. You should have no problem getting through to DiMarzio tech support after 12 noon EST.

The Blaze and the Blaze Custom both have offsets - http://darthphineas.com/2016/04/dimarzio-dp703-blaze-custom-bridge-model-7-string-humbucker/

The Blaze Custom generally blows away people that are more used to the regular Blaze. But there's a bit of a gap in moderate output 7 strings. Probably more so with coil offsets.

It might come down to needing to focus on the end result and not worrying about how they got there.

Re: What humbuckers have unequal windings?

I know many here have built hybrids with mismatched coils before, and the 59/Custom is one of my favorite pickups. They don't cancel hum as well as matched coils, but they are still really quiet.

Re: What humbuckers have unequal windings?

Best bet is to get several 7-string pickups to swap coils and magnets with and find what works for you.

Cant afford to chop up a bunch of pups. I have a couple of magnets though.

Re: What humbuckers have unequal windings?

I may just keep the custom and build another body with a better bridge route location.

If you like to experiment with unequal coils, there are things you can do with regular four conductor humbuckers to make the coils slightly uneven, such as splitting them a resistor and/or capacitor, in series or parallel with each other, or both. The lower the resistor value, or the higher the capacitor value, the more drastic the effects will be. It's a bit like trying to find the ideal values for a treble bleed.

I should have thought of that. I have a box full of resistors. I could also put a pot on the screw coil to dial in the optimal resistor value. That's what i did on my wah pedal to determine the best resistor for the "voice" circuit.

Re: What humbuckers have unequal windings?

...aaaaand now I'm having thoughts about using a multi-tapped screw coil in a humbucker, to be able to change the resonance of the coil (have a tap at an equal winding, then the end of the coil goes a bit further to an unequal winding for a kick).

Re: What humbuckers have unequal windings?

Unbalanced coils: Gibson Burstbuckers, Duncan Brobucker & '59/Custom, DiMarzio Fred and Bluesbucker, & Stew Mac's Parson Street.

I love my BB's, but i doubt there are any similar 7 string variants.

Re: What humbuckers have unequal windings?

Like Mincer said, the Custom Hybrid is your best off the shelf bet. Since only the windings on the coil count, you have about rougly 5400 winds on the bridge side and 7500 on the neckside (50 mm bobbing, single insulation). And thats a lot.
