What is Buddy Guy Playing?

Yeah, I was inspired by the Gilmour thread, but I've been wondering about this for a while.

What kind of amp is this? Blackface fender? Tweed?

I assume that he's just playing a '50s strat, but feel free to correct me on that one too.

Re: What is Buddy Guy Playing?

I like the size of the mic compared to the singer. Great song.

Re: What is Buddy Guy Playing?

Yeah, I thought it was always a Bassman that he used to use . . . usually gets some very bright tone from those things.

Re: What is Buddy Guy Playing?

Well that was easy. Probably will never play through a rig like that, but good to know.

Re: What is Buddy Guy Playing?

Anyone know what does use these days? You'll be surprised...

Re: What is Buddy Guy Playing?

Dayummm, that singer's got quite the set of pipes!!!!
Big Mama is sadly overlooked....
She had it in spades....died alone and broke....but even close to her depature she gave it all!

Tweed Bassman amps, Victoria copies of Tweed Bassman amps and the Chicago Blues Box Buddy Guy model which is, you guessed it...a copy of a tweed Bassman.

In addition to the tweed Bassman amps Buddy has been using a 2204 JCM 800 head for years early on witha 4x12 then later a 2x12 and these days a 1x12 cab loaded with a Tone Tubby hemp cone 12.

He also uses a Chicago Blues Box "Humbolt" which is a handwired clone of a 2203 but uses 6L6 power tubes.

Outside of that he has recorded in the past (10 years or so ago) with a Cyber Twin but the setting he used was the...wait for it...

Tweed Bassman!

Guitars include 2 Strats (both BG models) and a 74 Tele Deluxe plus a Jerry Jones Electric Sitar and effects include a Dunlop BG wah and sometimes a Boss OC-2 Octave.

I saw Buddy a year or 3 ago and he had 3 Strats that night, the Tele was there but never got used and he ran 2 CBB BG models one on either side of the stage and the JCM800 was on stage but looked like it never got fired up...no octave box that night and his wah was just a standard Crybaby that night...

that part always cracked me up, he went from bassmans to a modeling amp doing a bassman back to a bassman

Anyhoo, I think he's also used lace sensor golds for quite some time. His sig strat is pretty inexpensive...

Buddy was working on an album and didn't have his amps w/ him...the studio had a Cyber Twin...he dialed up a tweed Bassman setting, cranked the volume and dumpped the lows...worked for him!

Re: What is Buddy Guy Playing?

digital haters - just sayin'....it's not the tool. It's the man using it. And Buddy is THe MAN!

I don't think that's generalizable. Some artists can make do with less, but I don't think Michaelangelo could have carved David with a cold chisel.

Jeff Baxter said the same thing back in the early 80s in Guitar Player Magazine when they asked him how much the equipment matters. He said, "Not much. Sorry, guys, it's a poor workman that blames his tools!"

Buddy IS the man.
