What is "Roughcast"?

Re: What is "Roughcast"?

Verona? Have a glass of Vino at Botega Vini.

MarshallJCM - just because it is not measureable does not mean it isn't qualitatively different.

Edge/Kojo - the man brings up a very good point. The blind test is really the only way to tell. Almost ALL mag swaps are confounded with knowledge of the mag that went in.

Intriguing....

and to answer the OP's question; Roughcast is the Metal band Amir derak was in before he went all Emo on that Blue Monday cover.

Re: What is "Roughcast"?

There is a very real very audible difference between rough cast and polished mags. This is not in question at all. A compass is not a pickup its a false analogy.

It's interesting that such a seemingly small difference can have such a big tonal impact.

I looked up this thread because I keep hearing that JB's and sometimes 59's with RCA5 magnets can and do sound better to quite a few people. It occurred to me that I don't actually know what that is, so here I am.

The slight difference in magnetic fields from roughcast magnets seems to soften high ends that are a bit too harsh. A5's probably benefit from this the most. Zhang said he uses roughcasts in most of his bridge PU's, and I followed suit with mine.

Ill agree with this and for me roughcast is usually accompanied by a slightly less refined midrange. Which can be good and bad depending on perspective.

Re: What is "Roughcast"?

Slightly different question about roughcast.

Has anyone tried, or know what the deal is with short roughcast A5 mags?

Re: What is "Roughcast"?

Interesting thread. It's a question I've wondered about too. So, would a roughcast magnet be analogous to a scatter wound coil?

Maybe that's why I like it in the neck position of my Ibanez, even though most people would recommend a polished one for that position.
