What is the best bedroom amp (valve or solid state) for a David Gilmour sound?

Hi all, i currently have a Fender champion 20W. I want to know what amp is best to get a nice Gilmour tone in my room and can handle most pedals. I would also really appreciate it if anyone could give a detailed explanation on what the differences between a valve and solid state amp are. I know the valve uses tubes but could someone explain the sound capabilities and everything else? Thank you :)

It's hard to beat my fav: Hughes & Kettner Edition Blue 60R. Sweet cleans. Takes everything I throw at it. A Tech21 Power Engine 60 would probably do the same thing for a few more sheckles.

The op asks for Gilmour tone and you post Kerry King JCM tone?? WTF?

The differences between tube and SS amps can (and have) been covered in tons of magazine articles, forum posts, Youtube videos, and books. These days, the lines are a little blurred, as modeling has really taken off in the last few years. Let's be clear: there are wonderful SS and tube amps. There are also very bad SS and tube amps. You have to play a lot of them to get an idea of how they sound and 'feel'. Feel is a hard thing to put into words, and it is something you have to experience. So, before buying anything, do a ton of reading and watching. Don't mistake opinion for fact, and always try things out yourself (if you can).

I'm going to have to say modeller in your situation. You can download a model of the DR-103 Hiwatt for the Fender Mustang amp on the FUSE website, and go from there.

Most modelers include presets for GIlmour's sound, since it is so iconic. But after you get one, it is time to study what makes it sound the way it does.

Absolutely. My Mustang III is the most versatile amp I've ever owned. Sounds great and the built in effects are totally satisfying.

That's the reason modelers get a bad rap: the hokey sounding factory presets soaked through and through with dripping wet effects.

You've got to learn to create your own tones and store those as your presets.

www.gilmourish.com covers all of this in entirety. (Gilmour tones, Bedroom v Stage, Amps, guitars, pickups, pedals...)

Personally I'd go Blues Jr. with a speaker upgrade.
