What is you favourite pickup on a Charvel?

I Wrote Off The JB, I Was Wrong...it is amazing on a Charvel!!!

Just scored a US production model San Dimas with stock 59/JB, I couldn't yet find a serious enough flaw with the JB in there. In fact, it sounded superb!

With my other guitars the JB has always been either too bright, honky, too dark/muddy or they just annoy the hell outta me straight after the pickup change. Not in this one. My other guitars are all rosewood board so I'm not sure if this is a contributing factor.

So after a week(!) of owning it I swap the JB with a spare BKP Nailbomb alnico. Surprisingly it's the a-bomb that bombed: sounded too dark and raw for my liking. Swap them out after a day.

Has there been any other pickups that serves you better than the JB on a Charvel? please tell.

What amps and tone are you looking for?

I liked the StagMag in my old Charvel.

As for the JB, great pickup but to me the Antiquity JB is far better. Especially if you use an amp with a band. I can't put my finger on why, but it's just got something going on in the upper mids that's nicer.

If you want a real change of flavor, try a DiMarzio Super D or a Tone Zone.

Not all Charvels are created equally...different wood combos and scale lengths and so forth ;)

I struggled with a JB in one 80's Basswood Charvel I had–found the Screamin Demon worked better in that one (I love Basswood and I love JBs but everytime I've tried the two together on Strats, not just Charvels, I've had issues.)

I'll take it a step further. Charvels with the same woods during the same production run won't sound the same. not just Charvels, but most brands. even wood from the same tree. even the same slab of lumber.


I have a basswood Charvel that I put a JBJ into and dropped to D standard. 25.5 scale, rosewood board, Charvel-branded Schaller trem. sounded great. same guitar currently has a BKP VHII in there, tuned to standard E. still sounds fine... althought the BKP VHII (pickup) doesn't sound like VHII (album) in anything I've tried it with. lol!


also have a 2010 MIJ Charvel Pro Mod. alder, maple/maple, 25.5, FR 1000. I'm alright with the current production of the JB, although I prefer other iterations. 59n wasn't working out. current 59 models don't seem to do it for me. went full titanium with the Floyd rig when I put an A4/A2 S-Deco set in there. the S-Deco set is nice, but I'm not sure it'd work out the way I like without the clarity of the titanium - unless I had ordered them with different magnet options. but I do think a JBJ and a 59NJ would work fine in my Pro Mod.

I do have a BKP Nailbomb (alnico) set in another guitar. it works alright there, but it's a particularly bright guitar and I picked the Nailbomb specifically for it. I'd not see it meeting my goals in the Ti-d out Charvel, for example.


I can totally see the regular current JB model outperforming the A-Bomb in the OPs Charvel.

Got a model #4. The original bridge pu died years ago. I've had a cc, jb, and now pearly gates in the bridge. The jb was ok. The cc was better. The pg sounds really cool

I liked the Custom Custom in my Charvel So-Cal, by itself and combined with a Pearly Gates neck too.

It was the regular pearly gates with a2 magnet. Havent tried the custom shop yet.
Have pearlys in 3 of my guitars and they sound great.

Kramers are much the same. My old Kramer kills with a JB in it! My main Charvel has a SH16 in it .
