What is your "skeleton crew" setup?

What is the minimum cost of equipment you can have and still perform 90% of your full repertoire? I could do HSS Squier CV70 Strat with a CC in the bridge and a neck-on switch, a Sterling SUB4 with a detuner, a Boss BF-2 Flanger, a Rat, and a Fender Rumble 40. Rumble 40 is a great amp for both guitar and bass, Rat can take me from OD to Fuzz as well as function as a boost, BF-2 can give me Univibe, phaser, and chorus sounds, albeit only one at a time. SUB4 is a great bass with an active 2-band which is all I need; CV70 has pretty versatile set of stock pickups, but I prefer a fat humbucker and CC's are pretty cheap. The only issue here is that the Rumble 40 might be right on the edge of how loud I'd need if I wasn't going direct. New, this comes to $400 Strat + $50 CC + $300 Sub + $70 detuner + $100 BF2 + $100 Rat + $200 Rumble 40 = $1220; used I might be able to get it around $800

Well, any of my guitars, really, but I could get by with my $200 Dean Zone guitar (the one that is super yellow with Bee stickers) and a Boss Katana if I have to. But honestly, my normal rig isn't super expensive for a pro guitarist.

Probably my Iceman loaded with a Distortion and Black Winter and my Silver Jubilee

I'm taking this question as "what's the cheapest and most stripped down rig you can buy to get through a show?"

If I'm playing a 6 string, an Epiphone LP and a gen 2 Katana 100 combo with a footswitch. If I need a 7 string, probably a low end LTD Eclipse. For bass, a lower-end Ibanez SR and...? I don't know what cheap bass amps are out there for the kind of distorted tone I use.

I would be way better off buying all of that used, since that stuff is ubiquitous and doesn't retain a ton of value. Maybe $600-800.

If it's "what's the most stripped down rig I can bring with me from home", I played out for years with my Explorer, 100W half stack, tuner, and noise gate. At this point I could replace all of my pedalboard for either rig with the Line 6 HX Effects.

Most stripped down? Well, I could do that with either of my amps and any of my guitars but if I had to do a quick grab and go, my Boss Nextone amp w/ footswitch and old Frankenstrat build with CC/A2Pro pickups or one of my P90 Junior builds. Overdrive, Crybaby or Phase 90 are optional. Heck, could even get away with using a Peavey Predator (USA model) I got off Marketplace for $100. It now has HSS config from the stock SSS. But that one lives at the rehearsal studio for my cover band.

i played a show last night with a washburn wms, 18' cord, and the club owned beat up blues deluxe backline amp last night. sounded just fine. oh i did have a tuner but not inline.

Does the cost of a computer count? I could be quite happy with Amplitube for a rig. Just need a foot controller.

Guitar wise, the Chinese Les Paul that I bought for $150 on this forum many moons ago is just fine with new pickups.

I've often said to myself that if I had a better iPad with Amplitube on it, I could run that as a DI rig, even to a FRFR too, and be happy. It took some playing with it but I like what I've been able to get out of it on my Mac Mini thru the studio monitors. It's what I use majority of the time when practicing at home.

That's what I do most of the time right now and I have a lot of fun.

Atomic Firebox and Godin Exit 22 guitar with EMG 60/S/S pickups.
Ampeg SCR-DI and Yamaha TRBX505 bass (passive and active modes).
Guitar or bass pedal is sitting with an Amazon Basic tuner on a Pedalboard large riser with a usb/9v battery pack under it. Small enough to fit in my gigbag with guitar and xlr cables.

At home I am playing through powered EV ZLX12P speaker and ZXA1 sub but it can be whatever provided decent speaker and I would be happy.

I think I could get by with my little toaster-amp (vox ac15 with a marshall studio20 powerstage), tubescreamer, a cab loaded with either greenbacks or v30 & g12t75 speakers, and any Les Paul, but preferably one that I have made.

With that, I could do 99% of what I want.

Depends - live shows or recording, I don't really play live anymore so I'll do it for my recording setup which includes bass.

If I put my set of EMG 89s in it, I could go with my cheapest guitar (I got a great deal on it) an Ibanez rga42fm. It plays fine and while it doesn't have a whammy, I could be okay with that if I had to for sure. So that guitar was about 200 CAD and the EMGs themselves are worth a bit more, maybe 260 CAD. I'd get enough playability and variety of tones out of that guitar to be happy if it had to be the only one

For my bass I could make do with my Squier affinity bass (I think it was like 50-100 bucks used back in the day) and a set of Duncan quarter pounds which might be 150. I'd prefer EMGs if I only had one bass, but the Duncans are cheaper and I get a great sound from them. If I was playing a song I originally recorded on my 5 string I'd just tune down for that song and make it work.

The pedals I'd "need" are a boss fz-1 for guitar (mine was about 250 as it's the Waza version. But I'd be fine with the standard old one if it was cheaper) .

I'd also need a wah pedal, I use a zakk wylde but any run of the mill Dunlop crybaby would do it so maybe 100CAD.

And for bass my EH big Muff bass deluxe. So about 150 CAD for that.

If you're counting the actual recording gear I could get by with a basic PC that can run Ableton 11, you could get one just good enough for probably 300-400 CAD. I use neural plugins but since we're talking cheapest possible I could get by with an old PODHD400, maybe 100 used. I used one for years before I had a recording frontend.

Then I need Ableton itself though so that's the kicker. Technically you can pirate it so that's the cheapest way at 0. But I do own it and it was about 600 bucks. I'd "need" it for my full repertoire since I use a lot of the plugins for phaser, flanger, delay etc. and it's definitely cheaper/easier than having all those pedals. I suppose there might be free or much cheaper software I could get by with... But this is gonna be my one hard stop where I'm gonna be a dweeb about it and say , no, I "need" Ableton specifically. I have been using it for so long it's basically my main instrument.

I guess you need a way to hear it so let's toss in a basic pair of Sony headphones for another 50 bucks.

So I think we're talking cheapest way for me is about 1100 if you Pirate the software and 1700 if it's legit. I'd be able to make all my music with that rig. Guitar and bass. I'd have to use free drum samples as well but im no stranger to that.

My Mooer Miniboard (plus a little Mooer DI) straight into the board. Maybe $200 for pedals, Onespot and everything.

aren't those newer JS32 Jacksons just AWESOME for the money? That's my go-to when I'm trying an amp or pedal or something at the store, just grab a JS32 off the shelf and i'm always surprised how good they actually play and sound.

Any guitar with at least a decent sounding neck and bridge pickup that plays well and any amp that's loud enough to be heard and sounds OK. I mean, I love pedals and switching and stuff . . . but do I really need it? Nah, not really.
