What kind of amp?

Yay! Another amp thread! Everybody do the hustle!

...or not.

Anyway, since I've started playing more and more guitar over the paste year and half I've noticed my musical tastes have moved very far away from the high gain, in your face, brain-melting distortion kind of stuff. Less Marilyn Manson, Tool, RATM, Nirvana and more White Stripes, The Killers, and Incubus. A lot of new new-wave, garagey, blues-rock, kind of stuff. That new stuff I'm playing, it requires a lot less gain than the amp I currently own puts out. However, by that same token, I'm also way into the sounds/songs of bands like Default and Fuel. I've always been, and now I'm at a point where learning the songs is a bit of a cinch (not to say they're easy, by any means), so I enjoy playing around with that stuff too.

Anyway, I'd like to invest in a tube amp along the lines of a Peavey Classic 50 or a Traynor YCV40...which of the two would you recommend? or what other amps would you recommend?

Both of those amps are more into the sound/style I'm attracted to and will, most likely, stick with until I'm old and gray. (famous last words right?) However, I'd like to be able to recall those "heavy, high gain, face melting" Marilyn Manson, Fuel, Default, and Rage Against the Machine, and Nirvana tones every now and then. Would investing in a distortion pedal like the MXR Dime Distortion or Doubleshot be the way to go?

Re: What kind of amp?

Wait, I just realized how redundant this may seem. I post a thread asking about a gain/boost pedal then make an amp thread.

Well, yeah it is redudant. But, I guess, now I'm asking the question in reverse...or something. Anyway what kind of amp would you suggest for the kind of music I'm looking to play/develop? and opposite the boost/drive pedal, what would I use to get heavier tones? (without, of course, sounding to compressed or "fake")

Re: What kind of amp?

well, for the tones of bands like Default, that medium to high gain singing tone, you could go with a Framus Cobra... at least I think it's the Cobra.

Re: What kind of amp?

Yeah, I thought about that. But, you know, I don't want to totally steal every part of their guitar tone. I'm not that into Default. I guess a high distortion pedal into a low/mid gain amp would do the trick.

Thanks for the help!

Re: What kind of amp?

Try out any Fender tube amp and see if any of those turn you on... They're sweet sounding and very versatile..

Re: What kind of amp?

My buddy D!ck (JacksonMIA) has a Fender blues junior, it sounds really nice. He slapped in some JJ's to give it more umph and grind, They also tamed the high end. Most guys also throw in a new speaker...either way they sound nice with a pedal in front of them. If you want a few more watts and pristine clean, and great reverb go for the Deluxe reverb.

Another good sounding budget friendly amp is the Peavey classic 30, it is about $150 more than the Blues Jr but double the wattage and with two non-switchable channels.

I'm using a Dr. Z Maz Jr, it's a medium gain amp that I kick in the face with my pup booster. It isn't a mesa or DSL by any stretch of the imagination, but I can get some classic and modern tones with it.

A lot of guys are really into the traynor stuff, I've only played the one you mentioned and only briefly so I can't comment much about it.

Never heard this amp in real but: I thought this amp is more in your face! One guitarist of Unearth is playing it on the live video if I'm not wrong (DeadSkinSlayer gonna clear this up later - I'm sure ;) )!!
