What kind of magnet do I have?

Is there any way to tell wh t kind of pickup magnet you have without it be written on?

I know it is roughcast.

Going by everything I have ever ordered I am guess it is either A8 or unoriented A5.
Either way I guess it will work out good in a custom pickup but I'd love to know what I'm putting in.

Also I have some old Asian pups around. The magnets are so dark they are Lmost black. I am Pretty sure only ceramics are that dark?

Ceramics are very lightweight.
What you have there is the typical sandcast/unground magnet. Practically anything could be made like that.

I do know there is a phone gaussmeter app. Even if its not overly accurate it should narrow it down.....possibly even pinpoint the type.

Sorry Alex, but without zap-charging the magnet to max saturation, there's no way you can ACCURATELY guess the alnico grade, not even with a pro Gaussmeter, as some A2 and most A4 and UOA5 will read very close to each other, plus, you can add degaussed A5 to that list.

However, you'll be able to take an educated guess. And with a little bit of experience, your guesses will be right more times than not.

Well I've never bought anything besides a8 uorca5 or ceramic.

So I'd imagine if it's rc a5 I'll notice a decent output difference vs the double thick ceramic custom I have? I would think the A8 output level would be closer to the double thick ceramic?

Re: What kind of magnet do I have?

ceramic looks different and the a8 should be stronger than the uorca5 so id try the fridge test then mark the a5 with a black sharpie on the side so you dont have to go through this again

Re: What kind of magnet do I have?

Fridge test: Sticking the unknown magnet to the fridge along with a known magnet. You can at least tell which one is stronger when you go to pull them off.

So you've quoted me to disagree about a point I didn't make, then you finished off by then remaking the point I did make. Must be antagonistic hour for you in Denmark at the moment with 1/2 priced arguments......as this is not the only thread you've done this in.
