Played a Dorian

-------------4--5--7--
------3-5-7------
--5-7----

Discovered some pentatonic stuff...
Code:
-------------------------------------5--7----

Anyone who knows the name of this scale? Dorian pentatonic?
Can you make pentatonic of all the modes?

The scale sounded good for blues anyway..

You can shorten most of the modes down to matching pentatonic scales, just watch out for the notes that don't overlap properly . . . some of them can sound very out depending on where in the song you hit them. I'm a little confused about your diagrams above though . . . is the high E at the bottom?

Re: What kind of scale is this??

Sorry... My mistake. It's corrected now. Is the scale simply called Dorian Pentatonic?

Re: What kind of scale is this??

I would have to let someone better versed in music theory answer what the scale is called, but it's not really pentatonic. Pentatonic scales are only 1 2 3 5 6 (major) or 1 b3 4 5 b7 (minor). . . I would just look at it as playing in dorian but leaving out a few of the notes . . .

Re: What kind of scale is this??

I'd lyke to help, but tab gives me the shyts.

Re: What kind of scale is this??

I don't think that is a scale. It runs A B C# D E F F# G A.

It appear to be an A major scale but then the chromatic run from E to G throws that out the window. I dont think that is any scale because I dont think there is any scale that has a 4 note chromatic run... Maybe this is something jazz or classical? Some sort of genre of music where you can really step outside of the boundries? Where did you find this? It also doesnt sound very pretty.

Re: What kind of scale is this??

So what kind of progression do you think it'd sound good over?

Take it away Rid.

I think this calls for a jam of yours.

Re: What kind of scale is this??

The scale you tabbed is a G major pentatonic. It starts on G and has the intervals of a pentatonic scale. It should work well with anything in the key of G. For example, a chord progression of G-C-D.

Re: What kind of scale is this??

There is no such thing as a modal pentatonic. Pentatonic literally means 5 tone, i.e. we're skipping some notes in the traditional 7 tone scale. I mean, sure, it could be based off of a modal, such as Dorian. However, it's pentatonic, which is just plain different than modal. There are probably like 2 to 3 modals that a pentatonic could be, so it's not like you could just see the pentatonic scale and know what scale it is based off of (but you'd have 2 or 3 guesses...).

Anyways.... Hope that helps....

There are no sharps in the G pentatonic major scale.
GABDE

And there's no sharps in the scale posted that was based off of the A dorian (G major) scale.

-------------------------------------5--7----
------------------------------5--8
--------------------4--7--
-------------5--7--
--------5-7------
3--5-7----

What I see is, if the lowest line denotes the low E string, G-A-B-D-E-G-A-B-D-E-G-A-B. I still say it's a G major pentatonic that happens to stop at B instead of ending on E.

Re: What kind of scale is this??

Exactly, and there's no chromatic runs in the scale either. I don't think it sounds bad at all. Can't you guys hear the pentatonic sound of it??

You're right - I read sharps from the other post without even looking at the tab.

Hello? 4th fret D string = F#....

Hello? Look properly. It's 4th fret on the 3 string.

But guys, isn't this simply just a G Major Pentatonic scale?

I really never read tab, but that's what it looks lyke to me.

Re: What kind of scale is this??

G pentatonic :G-A-B-D-E

Start from the A on the low E-string and you've got the Dorian mode
