what mag swap for a jb?

love the overall mid spike of the jb and the clear tone when playing live. However I was wondering if there is a mag swap that would give me a less immediate sound? What im hearing in my head is a slower, softer tone with the clarity and upper mids of the jb. I see alot of forum members like it with a a2, would this get me closer? Also anyone tried it with a a4 or a3?

A2. This swap would get you part way towards the Allan Holdsworth signature HB spec.

Re: what mag swap for a jb?

I have a JB2. Great blend of a warm A2 and a bright JB. I'd also consider a JB4 and a JB UOA5.

Re: what mag swap for a jb?

I just did a UOA5JB and I thought it sounded magnificent... even though that's the one p'up I've never really been able to bond with in the first place.

HTH,

Agree with either the A2 or A4 or UOA5. I don't think the A3 is going to help you any. It's not going to soften the sound like an A2 or UOA5 will.

Re: what mag swap for a jb?

would the air mod change the characteristics of the tone to softer, less immediate sound? If anyone has done both what would be the difference between the air mod and a jb2,jb4 or jbuoa5?

Re: what mag swap for a jb?

Air mod pretty much just mimics some of an unoriented magnet's behavior (originally intended to replace A2), for a company wanting to stick to high volume purchases of fewer magnet varieties.

I'd just go with an A2 or UOA5. Or maybe an A4.

A3 is kinda odd. Quieter than A2, but with less low end and more treble. Slightly smoother than A5. I like it in neck pickups, particularly hot ones like a JB in the neck.

Re: what mag swap for a jb?

I know I've tried about every magnet out there in the JB at one time or another. I don't remember liking any of them except the A2. It is one of my favorite bridge pickups.
