What modeling amp for low gain?

Almost every clip I've heard from a modeling amp on here is high gain. I was wondering if any of you out there had experiences with cleans, lower gain and just breaking up models. Do they exist and if they do, which modeler works best for these kinds of sounds?

Re: What modeling amp for low gain?

Tech 21 poweramp with the speaker cab and a line6 PODxt.

I've heard that setup used for low gain many times and it sounds great. I just don't like modelers for high gain.

Re: What modeling amp for low gain?

Vox Valvetronix do low gain and crunch very well. The downside is (IMO) they don't do the high gain thing to well.

Re: What modeling amp for low gain?

I remember the J-Station doing a good job of it, but I haven't laid my hands on one in quite awhile so I can't say with any authority how it would stack up against the PodXT.

Re: What modeling amp for low gain?

Pretty much every clip I've ever done on this forum was a J-Station on a low-gain setting. My favorites are the Fender Blackface and Tweed, the VOX AC30, and the Matchless DC30 (with gain set low). Those all have nice clean sound, but I've never tried any other modeler.

Re: What modeling amp for low gain?

I've got a Korg AX100G, and it's got a really cool amp called "T-Boost" that's supposed to be an AC30 with a Tubescreamer in front. I don't know how authentic it is, but it's my favorite model.

The Behringer V-Amp2 has good Vox models, a really cool Fender Deluxe Reverb and Champ model, and two nice Dumble models. The trick with the V-Amp is finding the right cabinet for them.

Re: What modeling amp for low gain?

Thanks for the input guys, the J-station is looking mighty tempting right now, but having to but used makes me a bit wary.

I tried a Valvetronixs in store (before I knew that you needed time to tweak) so I'll look for reviews of those and look at prices. I'll also look at the Korg which are ~$50 on ebay right now.

Do you have any of those clips still up anywhere?

Re: What modeling amp for low gain?

My Boss GT-6 has some amazing clean amp models, including Fender Twin, Deluxe Reverb, Vox AC 30, and the Roland Jazz Chorus. The sounds are very convincing, and not dry or steril at all.

I've tried Pods, V-amps, Spiders's and the Boss GT-6 when I was looking for a moddler. For me, and for my needs and tastes, the Boss won hands down. All depends on how much you want to spend. This was the best $399 I spent on equipment. The bonus was is has made recording a breeze.

If you click on my soundclips, and listen to the intro to Heavens Door, that is my GT-6 doing the cleans, APH neck pickup on a Fender Twin model, with just a little verb. I think it sounds really good. I'll look to see if I have any other clean clips.

****Edit****, under my soundclips, listen to APH II Bridge Demo, Clean to Dirty. The first two clips are obviously an APH bridge pickup thru my GT-6, Fender Twin amp model.

Hopefully those will help you out a little.

Thanks Jeff, those clips sounded great.

I think this is a pretty good number of options to look into.

Re: What modeling amp for low gain?

I had a GT-6, and will agree with Jeff that it's a fantastic piece of equipment. Check out musicgoround.com... they usually have great deals on all the stuff mentioned on this page.

the vox valvetronix have awesome cleans!. when i was running my les paul (jb) in the nu metal (mesa boogie setting) sounded like ass! but my schecter hellraiser with emg's sounds amazing!

Re: What modeling amp for low gain?

I've tried all my guitars through the vox at just about every settings possible and I couldn't get an acceptable tone out of it. My roland cube 60 was better and now at guitar lessons that's what's provided so I don't have to verrify that by memory anymore.

Re: What modeling amp for low gain?

Boss GT-8.

The clean amps are cool, but I love to set up an amp like a Tweed or a Plexi clean and get crunch out of it just by picking harder or opening up my volume pots.

Re: What modeling amp for low gain?

Go to the store and play a Roland Cube 60. I think you will be quite happy with it.

Re: What modeling amp for low gain?

Roland Cubes are great... they are only good for cleans though.
Valvetronix would be my choice if I would be after a modeling up- because it's Vox, because of the tube (which you can change) and because they come in many options.
Marshall AVT, not a modeling amp but still combines solid state, digital and tube technology, and it gets nice cleans on the clean and Gain 1 channel (which you can turn from clean to drive just by playing with your volume knob).
Almost every modeling amp has a good clean option so I would worry less about it. The problem is with the tube emulating (lower gain to crazy gain).

Re: What modeling amp for low gain?

I have a Roland Cube 60 and I think it does clean, dirty and high vain very well for being a relatively inexpensive amp.

Re: What modeling amp for low gain?

Tech21 trademark series are pretty damn good modeler amps. can do a wide range stuff from cleans to metal.
