hi
i have a ibanez rg370dx, basswood body, maple neck, rosewood fretboard.
i want to replace the stock bridge pickup, i want a hi-gain pickup
i play mostly metallica, megadeth, pantera, destruction.
i thought about getting one of these pickup:
- SD JB
- SD DD
- Bill Lawrence L500XL (the pickup dimbag RIP from pantera used on his washburns)

the bill lawrence pup is cheaper than the duncans.
what do you say will fit me and my playing needs the best?

all 3 of 'em. If I were you of those 3 I would personally choose the Distoriton.

Rock On ~ Kac

do you have a specific reason why you would go for the distortion?

I guess it's the construction of the pickup. The JB has plenty of mids. It's quite versatile and has some vintage vibe to it thanks to the magnet and the wire, but for the music you play I'd prefer the tightness and smoother mids of a ceramic magnet. As I know the L500XL is wound with even thinner wire than the Distortion, which makes it a very tight, quite trebly and penetrating pickup. I think the Distortion would be a nice pick: tighter and hotter than the JB but not as extreme as the L500XL.

are you sure that the L500XL will be too much for me?
any more suggestions?

Lawrence has an philosophy that the pickup shouldn't have a "sound". If your guitar sounds good, such as not needing a mid spike or something, then the L500 would be a good choice. The L500 is high output, but transparent itself, sonicaly. A Lawrence humbucker sounds wonderful on well balanced guitars. If you want a mids spike, or a browner treble, or an other wise non-transparent tonal effect then you may not like it.

Ever think about the Invader? Its a high out put pickup which I like better than the JB or the Distortion. I fing the JB to be too trebly and/or ice-picky and the distortion to be a little to grainy. I got insane tone out of a Marshall JCM 2000 and a bullet squire that had an Invader. Might think about that one too.
