What Pedal for "4th of July" Tone?

Hey tone chasers, can anyone help me out? I'm looking for a pedal that gets this beautiful sludge. It's tight, but hairy without being too fuzzy. It's like distortion meets fuzz. It's coming loose at the seams, but keeping it together. I've tried nailing it with my TS into a Big Muff, but the saturation is too fine, not loose enough, if that makes any sense. I'm loving the tone. I realize that the low tuning and multiple tracks has a lot to do with it. Any ideas?

i'm lookin at your li'l gear list and i'm wondering why you can't nail Soundgarden tone

is that 2x12 cab the only cab you're using? pretty sure Kim was using Peavey heads and 4x12 cabs...that might help?

he also used an SG-style guitar...your Les Paul's gona be really fat for that...

I just saw them a few days ago. ****IN AMAZING. And yes, they played 4th of July.

Kim is using Mesa Electradyne heads and mesa combos - they looked like tremoverbs or rectoverbs. Not sure which.

As for a pedal to get the Soundgarden tone...

Check out 3:15, Andy plays Mailman. Considering that's a Tele (which both Kim and Chris use for that song) into a DRRI, I think that with a humbucker equipped axe into your Dual Showman, and a little tweaking of the spectrum control, you could easily get a great "4th of July" tone.

Also, Chris uses a 335 for most of his heavy tones, running into three different /13 amps, among them a 9/15. FWIW

Yeah, guess I didn't really try. Was just looking for a pedal to give instant destruction. But I think I found it. Check this out and tell me what ya think. Did this at bedroom volumes, doors open with gf sleeping in the next room:

It would be cool if we could embed soundcloud in the posts like we can youtube.

Dude, I am jealous. I wanna go!

The Nobels is pretty hairy for an od.

Sounds good, but not really much like the 4th of July tone. Too fuzzy/"muff-y." Never thought I'd hear myself say that there's too much muff, but yeah.

I think that it'd sound great with a detuned, humbucker-equipped guitar. I'm planning on gettting one in the next few weeks. If you don't mind waiting until then, I can give you a full on review of it then. I'm a huge Soundgarden fan, and that video is what made me want one.

Yeah, that was the big muff into the shiva's drive channel. Gain set low on both, amp and pedal. It's not dead on, but it's getting close to what I've had in my head for a sludgy tone. I've been looking at vids of the Nobels since you posted that. It's a pretty cool pedal.

Can't help you get the tone, but I've always LOVED that 4th of July riff, that is awesome. Good luck replicating it.

Re: What Pedal for "4th of July" Tone?

Thanks. I got pretty close last night. I agree, the tone was not as meaty and a bit muffy, but I think backing off the gain and upping the mids, adding a bit of volume and double tracking would get me close. I'd still like to find a pedal that cops that breakup. The Yeti Fuzz is pretty cool. So is the Meathead and Sonic Titan. All are xpensive, and not quite there. I wish I could buy em all!

Re: What Pedal for "4th of July" Tone?

It always seemed to me that Kim recorded that riff and then slowed it down. That's where most of the sludge comes from for me. I hear the same general sound on Zeppelin's "No Quarter", which was also slowed down. It's an amazing sound.

Re: What Pedal for "4th of July" Tone?

Agreed, great tone on that one; it reminds me of Mesa Rectos though (tastefully set, of course). Rectos always have that slight fizz/buzz to them, but if the treble and presence gets set back and the mids and bass gets pushed, you can get something like that without it being that stereotypical nu-metal sorta stuff that Rectos get known for. I'm not a huge fan of Rectos because I feel they color the guitar you're putting it through too much, but lots of folks love 'em.

By the time Superunknown (4th of July) came around, Kim was allready using Mesa's, afaik.

Re: What Pedal for "4th of July" Tone?

Since posting this thread I've done lots of reading and discovered that Superunknown was super produced, especially the guitar tone. So much so that it's been said the band was put off by it, which might explain the different sound on the following release.

I was hoping there was a pedal out there somewhere that nailed that, but after hours of youtube videos of different fuzzes n distortions, I guess it doesn't exist. It's probaby a combo of different amps.

Re: What Pedal for "4th of July" Tone?

Kim Thayil has always sounded to me like he uses light strings and a light touch for very heavy music. I could be way off, but it just sounds like that to my ears.

That runs counter to what I usually prescribe for a good heavy tone, but there's no denying the awesomeness of his playing. Such an extremely creative guy...
