alright, the stock dimarzio neck pickups in my san dimas charvel sound like crap. very dull and lifeless, very muddy and no tone at all!! so im gonna take that piece of crap out and put somehting else in.

i was thinking of a JB jr or a lil 59 for neck, my guitar teacher has a lil 59 in his strat and it sounds great but im worried that it wont sounds as good in my guitar. since it's a 24 fret guitar, im not sure how well it'll sound.

what im attempting to achieve is a tone similiar to petrucci's neck tone, and i know he uses humbuckers and an air norton there. but since mine is a h-s-s guitar what will get me close?

Re: what pickup for petrucci sounding leads in neck?

24 frets doesn't effect neck pickup sound really, it does mess with the middle position though. Find something with similar EQ and output to the airnorton, but in SC size, or go through the custom shop.

Re: what pickup for petrucci sounding leads in neck?

well the air norton has more mids and bass, so what do you all think about a hot rails? after watching the DT live in tokyo DVD last night, im realizing that he is truly badass, tone wise and skill wise!!!!

Re: what pickup for petrucci sounding leads in neck?

I'm sure the hotrails is real badass, but I don't believe it's Petrucci though. Too hot, fat and not enough smoothness. I'd got with the Lil' '59 since it's smooth, it doesn't lack output and it has very good picking attack response like the Air Norton. I hear this lil' monster can even do great riffs

Edit: Oh yeah, and don't forget about the lil's warm clean tones, that's why we love the Air Norton as well :32:

Re: what pickup for petrucci sounding leads in neck?

ok

i'll be sure to try out my teacher's strat tomorrow!!! :D
make sure it's as smooth as i remember

DMZ doesn't really make anything in a SC size that's sounds like the AN ... the vaguest suggest might be a pro track, VV solo and those wouldn't really sound like it, just get you into a suitable output range, SD doesn't really make anythig like the AN either probably there the previous suggestions on those woulb be about all I could think of. I actually might be inclined to say a DMZ SDS-1, but it's not humcancelling, kinda soapbarish, which might work out well in the neck position though as it might sound a bit more HB like.
Don't know man, tough call ...any other ideas?

Re: what pickup for petrucci sounding leads in neck?

I've got a Hot Rails in the neck of my Charvel 650xl and I love it. I do all my soloing with the Hot Rails on that guitar. It provides some amzing shred metal lead tones. However, I wouldn't say it is close to Petrucci's sound, at least in the early days. Some of his solos on Train of Thought using the neck pickup are fairly close to what I can get with the Hot Rails.

I'm trying a Cool Rails in the neck of my Californian when it is done being refinished. I'm thinking it might be a good match as well. I personally didn't like the Little 59 I had in the neck of my Hamer Chaparral. The full size 59 is another story all together. That thing rocks in the neck.

damn

alot of different ideas
haha

i'll try the lil 59 out again todfay

Re: what pickup for petrucci sounding leads in neck?

Well, I had a pair of Little 59s matched up with a JB in a Hamer Chaparral that had a mahogany body, set maple neck, and rosewood fretboard, 24.75" scale and OFR. Honestly I wasn't a big fan of any of the pickups. I could get a good sparkly lean tone out of them (especially when split) but under high gain, they just didn't fit the bill. I generally prefer hotter pickups and I do a lot of soloing in the neck position. I found that the Little 59 in the neck didn't have the smoothness and sustain I was looking for. However, it was rather articulate and would be suited for clean or low gain jazz/blues runs. But since I tend to sway on the shred side of the metal coin, it just didn't cut it for me.

Interestingly enough, my new Hamer Artist Korina which has a pair of full sized 59s is incredibly versatile. I can go from squeeky clean, to blues/jazz, to all out shred with miinal amp eq-ing. I was actually pleasently surprised the 59s could handle the shred side of things.

i tried my teachers strat today with the lil 59 in neck and i was amazing!!!!! even through te little crappy amp we played thorugh it still sounded great.
