actually srv had pups that were pretty low output, something along the lines of an antiquity II surfer. i dont think srv would like the texas specials, he'd probably like the custom '54 better of the fender offerings. too me the texas specials are trying to make up for the fact that most people dont use strings that heavy
besides bear paws for hands and great chops...
a fender amp or better yet two fender type amps turned up real loud with a strat with low output pups and heavy strings detuned
strings don't matter much
If Ted Nugent played SRV's Strat through SRV's amp he still wouldn't sound like SRV unless he played like SRV
BigDaddy said:SRV did most of his playing on the first 3 string as with most blues oriented guitar players. What you use on the low 3 doesn't make as much of a difference.
When did he start using those strings? And how many songs on his albums did he use them. Did he use them on all his guitars all the time?
See, it's just not that big a factor. It's a small part of his later sound.
A good strat + overdrive pedal + fender amp is all you really need and of course the chops. Everything else is not as important.

Yes, it is skill and technique - however, it is also the 11's-52's and low output pups.
Fender tends to market Texas Specials as SRV's pups - but that's marketing bull crap.
Jeremy was right on with his analysis.

I am not into SRV, I don't care whos thread this is!
FWIW: I am good friends with SRV's tech, the best tech he ever had, Rene Martinez, I know what was in SRV's guitar,amp,fx's..etc I know things I cannot disclose.
If I tell you it's the STUPID strings and you don't want to take my word for then go on with your bad selfs,
I don't Like SRV's music or his sound and I really don't need to hear you guys trying to sound like SRV ever!,
and for that matter I do not want to ever hear a soul trying to sound like SRV as long as I live!
But if you have too;
Get GHS NICKEL "simi flats" and some low DC pups. SRV's strings were 58/38/28/19/17/13 and if you think the bass side was not a huge part of SRV's sound then your advise is totally useless!
6k Strat pups with double build Formvar coated magnet wire and request slightly aged A5 magnets.
I'M DONE!
