what pickups for my lp custom?

My '97 have whatever gibbo but them these bad boys from the factory. They're not bad, sure ain't great.

My standard has a duncan distortion in the bridge and a duncan jazz in the neck and it rocks. I was going to do the same combo but figured I'd ask you guys if I should try something a little different but in the same ballpark.

Must come with a gold cover or able to be put into a gold cover.

Thanks guys

Re: what pickups for my lp custom?

Maybe a 59 or PG in the neck for a more vintage PAF flavor. Also the neck from the Whole Lotta set too.

In the bridge the Black winter seems to get lots of love and is close tone wise to a distortion.

You could also try either a Dimebucker or Alt 8. To me these two have more note definition and clarity then the Distortion but retain the same output.

Re: what pickups for my lp custom?

The Black Winter to me seems to be a higher output distortion with more balance, mids and clarity. It doesn't come with a gold cover standard, but you could probably get one. I don't think a black winter set would be a bad choice.

Similar but different? How about a Distortion neck in the bridge and a Screamin Demon in the neck???

Re: what pickups for my lp custom?

I'm a huge fan of the Pearly Gates / Custom in any Les Paul.

Custom is hot, will have the highs of the Distortion, but more thump.

pearly gates is a neck pickup? I had a duncan custom in my standard before the DD and I didn't care for it. It had a nice thump and was GREAT for classic rock but for higher gain stuff it really didn't cut through. I'd play real riffy metallica rhythm stuff and i felt the low end was flubbing through passages.

Re: what pickups for my lp custom?

I will suggest you go and take a look at the ASKING FOR PICKUP ADVICE thread….A little something I threw together. Just a suggestion.

Now - I'll ask all the right questions:

What amp?
What fx?
What style of music?

One comment I make is that if you are using a mega-gain amp, a mega gain pickup may be a bad choice; Gain + Gain usually = yuck.

A lower output pup may be the cure. Try a 59, or a pearly gates. Maybe a demon. If you need low end tightness and cut through - that's a Distortion to me.

And yes, there is a Pearly Gates neck pickup. The most fantastic neck pickup for a Les Paul all around IMO. If I were going High output for Metallica in the bridge, I'd use a Distortion. For something slightly different, you might try a Distortion with an A8 magnet.

Re: what pickups for my lp custom?

I guess a DD is what I'm going with then. I may try the pearly gates in the neck.

Here's the rundown:

amp - marshall SL5 slash combo
fx - boss digital delay (not really using fx as the amp has no fx loop)
style of music - mostly classic rock but I like to get that 80s high gain sound once in a while (metallica, ozzy, whitesnake etc).

how would you compare the pearly gates to the duncan jazz?

Re: what pickups for my lp custom?

The PG will not be as clear or bright but will be more full and rounded on the highs and more vintage with some rudeness. You might also like the A2P in the neck it's the same wind as the Jazz but with a A2 mag.

If your want classic rock a JB or Custom in the bridge will do that if your looking for a different flavor from the Distortion.
