What pickups for PRS SE Zach Myers?

I just got a new PRS SE Zach Myers and its a great guitar but the pickups are "meh"... Was thinking of putting in a Custom Custom bridge and 59 or Phat Cat Neck...does this seem reasonable? Wanting something medium output for the bridge and mellower for the neck.

The Custom Custom and 59n would be a REALLY fat set if that is what you are after. The 59 neck might be boomy. I've tried the Whole Lotta set, and Gibson 57 Classics, and Seths in a regular PRS SE 245. Those are ALL equally great sets in SE 245's.

I have an SE Zach Myers semihollow in which I installed PRS McCarty pickups (which I normally love), but they're turning out to be a bit too dark in this guitar. I'm currently looking at replacing them with a covered Pearly Gates set.

Welcome to the forum!

I love the Custom Custom, but it has lots of mids, so be sure you love mids. If you want something more open (less mids, more bass and treble), check out the 59/Custom Hybrid. I also like the Phat Cat or Whole Lotta Humbucker in the neck.

I was leaning towards a Pearly Gates set as well to replace the stocks on my PRS SE Zach Myers, but now that I have heard the demo of the new Saturday Night Special set. I think I am going to get them. Awesome vintage/hot tones.

im considering getting this guitar and i am wondering what pickups you settled on and how they sound.

I have a set of DiMarzio Bluesbuckers in my PRS Custom 24 and they sound phenomenal.

Re: What pickups for PRS SE Zach Myers?

I have a '59/Phat Cat combo in my PRS SE Nick Catanese, and a Slash/Jazz combo in my SE Singlecut Korina. I suspect you want a hotter pickup than either the '59 or the Slash for the bridge, but as far as neck pickups I prefer the Phat Cat for cleans and crunch and the Jazz for high-gain liquidy leads.

The Phat Cat has a killer spanky clean and mildly overdriven tone. High gain soloing is not its strength, though, I feel. I'm undecided about swapping the pot for 250K for my neck pickup because it does get a bit thin and screechy higher up the fretboard under high-gain, but clean and crunchy tones sound glorious on it, and I don't wanna lose that.

The Jazz has a very clear high-gain lead tone, and pretty decent cleans too, just not as spanky and full of character as the Phat Cat, IMO.

Actually I need a medium output pickup. I'm in a cover band doing a lot of classic rock. I need versatility and I actually love a 59 in the neck but fear it may be too boomy. I'm considering a 59/custom hybrid or a custom custom for the bridge.
