What pickups in my agile?

Im buying an agile al3000 or 3500 soon and im going to be getting new pick ups with it. What do you guys suggest? Is there a good combo to get a nice indi-ish/rock-ish sound and then the other pickup to be a little more hardcore when i need it? Whats a good combo for that? I was thinking emg81s for the bridge for the harder stuff, but what for the neck?

While the EMG's are certainly a viable option, you may want to consider having a set wound for your needs. Much more cost effective and great, great tone. Consider Mick at www.manliusguitars.com or Jeff at www.highorderpickups.com Each of these handwounds go for around $100 a set. No affiliation to either winder. just a very satisfied customer. For a bit more coin and fabulous tone, try Jon Moore at www.tonefordays.com

Duncan and Dimarzio also offer excelent sounding pickups that would kill in your Agile. Congrats on your new guitar. I understand these are great gutiars for the money!

Of course he may like the stock pups, so you never know.

That's very true. I've heard good things about the pups on the better quality Agiles. You never know when you'll be pleasently surprised by the stock offerings. I've had a few "budget" gutiars in my day that sounded great as is with no changes. Of course, I sometimes had to learn the hard way by fixing what was not broken!

Re: What pickups in my agile?

I was looking at the Agile 3000 & 3500's myself.
It seems like Rondo Music has a Duncanized version with most of the mods necessary already in place. Tone Pros bridge. 59 and Jazz pickups. Upgraded tuners. I think Rondo offers it for $630. I would be tempted to go for this one, just buy it set it up and Pooof done.
If I bought the 3000 I would probably have to put around $300 into pups, bridge etc...
Now as for the PUP's.... I've only ever heard good things about the EMG 81 so that might work well for you especially if you buy the 3000 and plan on changing the PUP's out anyways.
Good luck

yeah...i was looking at the 3500 with duncans but those pickups dont suit me. It would be perfect if it was just a 3500 with *your choice* of two duncan pickups. I think I may grab the 3500 w/ stock pick ups, play it stock for a while, then get some new ones.

Would i have any problem mixing a really heavy pup like the emg 81 with a not so hard pup that would just give me a nice rock/indie sound? Ive never upgraded pickups on my guitars so I dont know much about whats good to mix and match.

Re: What pickups in my agile?

The stock pickups on the AL3000 are pretty much like 59's in sound. I switched out my bridge pickup to a Dimebucker and I want to punch myself in the face. The stocks sound nice for a while, but then it feels like they die out to my ears. I'm prolly going to get either a JB or Custom for mine in the near future.

That Agile is a sweet guitar, though. Congrats.

Re: What pickups in my agile?

lower output pickups comes to mind when you say indie-ish/rock-ish. your amp is an important factor in the tonal equation. if its a high gain amp, lower output pickups are more versatile.

for indie stuff, i favor a mildly overdriven tone which allows me to clean up with a turn of the volume knob. lower output pickups are more sensitive for that application. for rock to metal, i just slap the gain or a stomp box till my ceiling comes crashing down.

well, that is just my 2 cents. if you decided on the 81 in the bridge, try an 89 wired for the sa coil in normal mode for the neck. fat single coil tone well suited for indies and rock. also, a pull of the push-pull pot will convert the 89 to an 85 for blistering lead tones.
