Well, he used the Charvel Green Meanie for all of Eat 'Em and Smile. I always thought he had DiMarzio PAF Pro's in there. But I've heard rumors of an X2N in the bridge.
X2N in his Green Meanie for sure, but I think during the pre-production versions of the Jem models based off his Green Meanie, he switched to PAF PRO's.
Wasn't this also during the Eat 'Em And Smile tour?
Not sure about hte green meanie, but he also used a built-in preamp called the Alembic Stratoblaster in one or some of his guitars at one point. He liked LOUD guitars!
I would put my money on PAF Pro's if he used anything but the Green Meanie and its a good chance he had them in it too. He was a Dimarzio posterboy for that model around that time if memory serves. They had him and Sheehan in the ads IIRC
+1 on the PAF pros...It was the first replacement pup I bought at the tender age of 15....thinking I was going to sound like Vai after I wired it up.....boy was I disappointed!
BTW, Let me add...I later replaced the PAF pro with a JB....and low and behold, I sounded like Vito Bratta!
I always thought Vai's pickup after the X2N was the PAF Pro 2, prior to the Evolution.
That's right....PAF Pro 2.
Either way, I suppose an 8k PAF-type pickup with an A5 magnet in a floating-whammy guitar would have enough high-end for his aggressive tone, for sure. Ouch.
Though I've never encountered one in person, some Vai fanatics have mentioned this to me before. As I recall it was similar to the PAF Pro but had a ceramic magnet.
I was hopeing that Wayne Guitars site would of listed the type of pickup they use in the reproductions of the Green Meenie but they do not... Doesn't Vai's Flexable album list the strat as having the X2N pickup in the gear credits... The first DLR album was not long after that..... The Green Meanie i think is the first guitar i heard of being made basswood... been thinking of stripping my basswood strat that i mess up the router job on and turn it into my own Green Meanie....
On a side note somewhere sitting in a tape vault somewhere is a cover tune that was meant to go on to one of the DLR solo albums with Vai.... It was bumped at the last second for another tune... Anyway the tune is called Kids In Action by Canadian guitarist/frontman Kim Mitchell.... The piece is a work out on the guitar from his 1982 Kim Mitchell EP now out on cd in the USA on Wounded Bird Records.... I would of loved to of heard Vai's take on this tune!
