What Recording Devices Do You Use To Record Other Than Computer/MIDI?

Re: What Do You Use To Record Other Than Computer/MIDI?

I record one instrument at a time.

Guitars - Electric - Sennheiser MD-421 U5 off axis
Acoustic - Audio Technica AT-4050 on my cheapo Martin or I'll go direct with my Ovation

Bass - AKG D112 or (99% of the time) Ampeg SVTDI box

Drums -
cymbals/overheads - AT-4050
kick - D112
tom - MD-421
snare - Shure SM57

Vocals - Shure SM7B

For mic pres it's a mix of the onboard ones from my Apogee Ensemble and the API 3124+. I'm pretty happy so far (for a beginning rig I'm getting some pretty good tone without having to work really hard at it), but my next investment will be monitors and then UAD-2 plugins (my stock Logic Pro ones don't seem to be doing anything for my mixes, but I'm an amateur home recorder so my mixing skills may be more of the issue than the ITB software at this point). In the next year, all gear advances will be recording gear, I'm done with electric guitar (only thing I'll be upgrading will be my bass). The whole world of recording really is pretty overwhelming, but it's becoming a fun addiction already.

Wow, having a band would be cool. %). J/K been there.

Right now: AKG Perception 220 (guitars/vox), Mackie Onyx Firewire (with Onyx Pres). Bass direct, drums are ACID loops. I'd love me a 414, but them's money I ain't have.

Fantastic setup! What is the process for recording with a pro setup like that? In other words how do you prep and then what do you do once you have the tracks recorded?

Fantastic setup! What is the process for recording with a pro setup like that? In other words how do you prep and then what do you do once you have the tracks recorded?

It all starts with the artist... the songs... The music has to dictate & conjure something tangible. I'll talk with the band about what they envision the record to be... talk about budget... and then we'll come up with some options about where & how to record, and discuss how that will affect the outcome of the project.

The idea is to get as close as possible to having it all laid out, or as close as possible to that point before we begin.

You have to have it your head to get it out of your head.

But it really does all start with the songs...

Peace.

Re: What Recording Devices Do You Use To Record Other Than Computer/MIDI?

I don't do much but I've got an Alesis MultiMix Firewire 12 that'll handle any junk I do. It'll record up to 12 channels at one time but the most I've ever had at a time was 4. I've got an electric drum set (don't judge, I needed something to learn on that didn't disturb the neighbors) that I can plug right in.

On top of that I've got SM57's for recording amps, guitars and bass. I have a few AT2020's and SM58's for vocals, acoustic, and other things. Works great for me, and it's an incredible "budget" rig if you want something simple and fun to play around with!

Re: What Recording Devices Do You Use To Record Other Than Computer/MIDI?

I use a Heil PR-30 and a Shure Beta 57A for micing amps, a Rode NTV tube mic for vocals, and a Rode NT-2 for acoustic guitars. They go into either the preamps of my Metric Halo ULN-2 audio interface or my Brice tube mic pre and sometimes the Brice mono tube compressor. All mix processing is done in an iMac G5 2.0GHz running Logic Pro 8. Monitors are Tannoy System 600A dual concentric actives.

Tascam 2488 recorder
Mics-
Shure SM57's & Beta58's, PG52
Studio Projects C1
MXL Overheads

ART Tube Compressor

M-Audio BX-8 Monitors.

That's about it. I would like to get a nice tube preamp and eventually a real nice vocal mic but I've been able to do pretty much everything I need with this setup. It is simple and works well for me.

Man, your band is SMOKIN!

Re: What Recording Devices Do You Use To Record Other Than Computer/MIDI?

I go from 0 budget to real high end, depending on what the circumstances are.

I have recorded with a stolen dynamic mic directly into a laptop, and I have recorded with Earthworks QTC's, 421's, and KM140's into Focusrites and Metric Halo ULN8 into the Logic rig from hell. (none of that stuff is mine --- all was Virginia Tech's)

I usually record with an SM57 into a Line6 TonePort GX into Audacity :YAWN!:
