Can y'all recommend a few recordings I can check out to hear each of the following amps:

1. Fender Deluxe Reverb

2. Fender Super Reverb

3. Fender Bassman

Thanks.

Re: What recordings feature these Fender amps?

The Super Reverb is come good SRV and BB King (old bb). Buddy Guy had the Bassman on every one of his recordings, he dosnt do a gig w/o it ('cept for the new stuff, which he uses a Cyber Delux), And the Delux is old JM and the blues brakers, and JM plays it. There ya go man.

Hasn't BB always used LAB SS amps? SRV used Super Reverbs & Vibroverbs live (Mucombo is a great example curr. avail) and Bassmans' later on his last studio album. I always thought Bassmans were cool but only if you could crank 'em (and NO ONE can :smack: ). You can never go wrong with a good old silverface Super Reverb--big fat and huge at any volume. IMO, the Deluxe Reverb is just a thinner (and lighter) version of the SR.

Re: What recordings feature these Fender amps?

In my Guitar Player Repair Guide, he mentions using Fender Supers in his early days up towards the late 60's when they started changing stuff and adding knobs, so he to the LAB SS amps which he felt were the best "copy" of his original tone.

Re: What recordings feature these Fender amps?

I saw B.B. King, and he used 2 Marshall 1/2 stacks.

Re: What recordings feature these Fender amps?

well, Robert Cray uses a Bassman and a Matchless, at least last time I ckecked.

Re: What recordings feature these Fender amps?

Buddy Guy in the 60's did use Fender tweed Bassmans...that was a very good call. Stone Crazy, Walking Through the Woods, Watch Yourself...alot of that old Chess stuff.

I think I read that SRV used a '59 tweed Bassman for his last studio album that was released while he was still with us...not the "Sky Is Crying" CD (that was bits and pieces from differant sessions) but the one just before it...the one he recorded right after he cleaned up. He used the Bassman for most of those cuts I believe, but I can't remember the name of the album! DOH!

Pete Anderson uses a DR for most of his session work and work with Dwight Yoakum...but it's not a stock DR: he uses an EVM speaker and 6L6 tubes.

"In Step" was SRV's last studio album. It's great! I thought he was using his "wall of sound" though (complete with Dumbles, Fenders, and Marshalls). I saw him play on the last tour, and it was definetly in effect complete with all kinds of crazy amps and effects.

Re: What recordings feature these Fender amps?

"In Step" right! I read an interview with Stevie where, if I remember correctly (which I may not be!), he said he used a mint original Bassman for alot of or most of that album...

Re: What recordings feature these Fender amps?

Either a Deluxe or a Super. IMO having both would be the ulimate. I uas a 69 Super. It is my favorite amp, but in some situations it gets difficult to play with enough volume to get that good tube crunch from it. At 22 watts the Deluxe is an excellent club amp. At volumes settings at 3 to 6 it has amazing sound a great blues amp. Once the volume gets over 6 they tend to get muddier, not louder. So in larger clubs the Super would prove to be a better choice(40 watts).

there are lots of albums with those amps but a tweed bassman is gonna sound alot different than a bf one. i played a gig thru a bf bassman head and 2x12 sealed back cab and the tone was killer!!

Yep, but as you mentioned, the 50's tweed Bassman is a TOTALLY differant amp and circuit than the 60's blackface Bassman. And most blackface Bassmans need some serious mods to get them to be great guitar amps...tho the speakers are often superb sounding mid 60's Jensen C12NA's. At one time, those were Eric Clapton's favorite speakers. Lew
