What Seymour Duncan Pickup is this?

Can you guys tell me what pickup this is?

I bought it off a guy on a forum. He said the pickup is a Seymour Duncan '59/Custom hybrid. It can't be because it doesn't have a coil tap. It's only two wires. No Seymour Duncan logo on front. Not only this but the package was smashed in shipping due to poor packing and both legs are bent on the pup. I'm afraid the magnet could be cracked? Who knows. Thanks

I don't know, but the baseplate is wrong too. On newer p'ups like the 59/C the baseplate has the holes for the screw polepieces under the slugs too.

Re: What Seymour Duncan Pickup is this?

I'm beginning to think this is a 'Frankenstein' pickup.

Hard to say. Strange sticker too. It is easy to see if the magnet has been damage (I think it is not possible indeed). Remove the tape just to gain access to the magnet and pull it out. Have you already measure it?

OHMS are 11K so it's not a 59 I guess?

11 is the dc resistance of a 59/custom hybrid. And right it is not a 59. SD marks the magnets with colors. Is its magnet signed?

I'm thinking it might be a homemade 59/C. If the magnet is an A2 or A4, there's a good chance it's one of the ones made before it became a production pickup, no way to tell that by looking at it though. Why not just talk with the guy you bought it from?

Re: What Seymour Duncan Pickup is this?

I think it might be the "other half" of a homemade 59/Custom. The long leg baseplate looks maybe like a 59 plate from the early-mid 2000s with the single conductor wire attached, the tape has been changed as 59s wrap the baseplate and it measures like a hybrid. I would wire it in and see what it sounds like. I bought a home made 59/Custom, knowing up front and for the right price, and it's one of the best sounding pickups I have.

The only issue with the reverse version (if that is what it is) is I believe you would have a 59 slug coil and Custom screw coil, so if you do change it to 4 conductor you might want to split it differently than other hybrids.

Yeah, looks like a homemade hybrid, not a production version. That said, might be cool! That's how they started out, after all.

However, if you were lead to believe this pickup was a production version, then you were misled. Either way, I hope you didn't pay as much as a production version for it!

Look at the color of the wire through the little holes on the top of the bobbins. If it is a 59/Custom hybrid, one of the coils will have a brownish wire, and the other one will be a brighter copper color. The darker one is the 59, brighter is the Custom.

Yep, this is what I have. So my only complaint is I wanted a coil tap for my Super Strat and I really don't want to dissect the pup. I wonder how much of a different sound there is with the single coil tap? I love the Custom Custom coil split but maybe this one isn't as great split

I think I can bend the legs back in shape without any problems so I might as well keep the pickup since I only paid 45 for it.

Re: What Seymour Duncan Pickup is this?

Careful bending the legs back...they have a tendency to snap off. As for the split, I'd still do it and see what you think...might be great!

Guy gave me back 20 bucks and I kept the pup. I was able to bend the legs back fine :arms: Now in awhile I will try it out and see ;)

Re: What Seymour Duncan Pickup is this?

But you can'r split it the way it is, you need all 4 conductors to do that. It isn't a difficult procedure to do it yourself, but you DO have to be very careful when working with those small coil wires.

If you do want to change it to 4 conductor let us know, there are many forum members who can help you if I don't notice your post myself.

Great and helpful info. Thanks for posting that Frank.
