What short licks for recording soundclips?

Assuming you want to record how your bass sounds after each modification, what kind of thing would you play?

I think a couple short licks that do this would be nice:
  • Mix of short and long notes so that you can judge how the sustain decays but also check that it isn't too muddy
  • Easy enough to play that others can do them, too, without playing making too much of a difference
  • Belong to a real song, so that you can later see how it mixes when you put it together with other instruments

I already used "Rainbow in the Dark" for a couple years but it's getting boring :)

I suppose whatever licks come up should be played in at least two keys so that basses that are weak in some ranges have a chance. Three keys if it has a low B string I suppose.

What would you use?

Personal taste, I'd say something from Maiden.
Harris is a real riff driven player and on the first couple of albums there was a ton of stand alone licks and riffs that go trough a wide range.
Ghengis Khan or Phantom of the Opera immediately come to mind.

As it's just been on iTunes, I'd suggest a judicious lift from Green Day's 'Longview' as it has a nice distinctive bass line in it.

Something you know well, that you can nail. Songs that people recognize, that are signature examples of the sound that bass can generate.
