What speaker to pair up with a celestion vintage 30?

Hello, it's been 20 days ( I ve been on holidays - pictures to follow just so that I can make you jealus )

So I will buy a traynor ycv40wr. It has its own optional extension cab but i want to get a different speaker, since they are both vintage 30s.

So what other speaker can I get to pair it up? I play blues and classic rock.

Also where can i get an empty cab from (online store)?

Thanks a lot!

G12H30. Don't even consider anything else. The V 30/G12H30 combo is unbeatable, IMO. Lew

I'd try Ebay. I bought a real nice unloaded used Matchless 2 x 12 cab a while back on ebay for pretty cheap. Just have to keep your eyes open and be patient. Lew

I think the V30/G12H30 combination is very good, but I prefer the V30/CL80 combination, different strokes for different folks :)

I like the Classic 80...it's a little less British sounding than the G12H30 although still very British sounding. Eric Johnson used them for a short while.

But the V30/G12H30 combo is becoming a classic...and the G12H30 is my favorite Celestion.

The V30/G12H30 is definitely a classic a lot of pros swear by. I like the extra power handling I get out of the CL80s, but the more focused sound may not be for everyone. You can't go wrong with the V30/G12H30. :fing2:

a G12H is quite expensive.
isn't a Eminence Wizard some kind of G12H copy? i thought of
building a 212 with this two speakers (v30+wizard)

It is...it's a very good speaker. Not the equal of a real G12H30, IMO, but a very good speaker. You get what you pay for. You can spend a bit more and get the right one the first time around and be done with it.....or spend less and be less than totally satisfied and always know that you have second best. It's up to you. :) Lew

If you ever plan on micing that cabinet up, I'd advise against mixing speakers, but if it's just for live stuff, the previous mentioned combo will do just fine.

It doesn't matter. And with two differant speakers you can mike either and go for whichever sounds better that day...

Ditto on that G12H-30/V30 mix. Thats the combo that I used on all my clips.

Wrong, it does matter. That other speaker affects the tone pretty greatly when mic'd up.

Re: What speaker to pair up with a celestion vintage 30?

Negatively affects it? Not from my experience. I have several cabinets, and at one time ran a rig with 6 cabs:

2 2x10's
2 2x12's (one V30 loaded, one J.F. Naylor Jensen style)
2 1x15's

Miking the sound of one cab, while running a different speaker that is unmiked is practically irrelevant. Unless you're saying that the second cab bleeds, but in that case it would be a sound you wanted I assume. If miking both cabs individually, then you'll get a great stereo spread if you pan them, and a double-fat sound if they're panned center. If you're talking about phasing issues, they can be addressed plenty of other ways, and are equally prevalent among identical cabs. You can also spatially isolate the cabs and mic them seperately with no bleed whatsoever.

I think what Lew's saying is that no, we wouldn't "advise against" mixing the speaker types in either a single or double miking situation, live or studio.

As for the speakers, the G12 is great. My sound was always the Naylor Jensen types mixed with whatever british speaker I wanted at the time, Vintage Celestion 10's or 12's. At one time I had a smoking rock tone from the Naylors and Peavey Scorpions! Though dry, cold, and generally lousy by themselves, they stayed crisp and tight while the Naylors were bouncing and rattling away. My Naylors are from before they even named them, but they're similar to the Special design 50, with some mods.

Re: What speaker to pair up with a celestion vintage 30?

Not a second cab - two different speakers in one cab, when closed mic, generally alters the tone in a way I find undesireable.

I've had cabs with V30's and C90's mixed, as well as V30's and G12T75's mixed, and neither sounded good as when it was just V30's in the cabinet.

Re: What speaker to pair up with a celestion vintage 30?

I understand. Fingerace is asking about an extension cab in the first post. If the cab is wide open backed, I'd still say you can mix/match, but the mic bleed is unavoidable. If it's closed back, I probably wouldn't mix speakers. Everything I've owned has had matching speakers per each cab. I remember liking the old ADA split style cabs with a V30 and EV combo, but we were going for different sounds back then. We always miked the V30.

Re: What speaker to pair up with a celestion vintage 30?

Ah thanks for clearing that up! Sorry for stirring up ish that didn't need stirring - I didn't read the full post, didn't realize it was an extension cab.

My apologies!

Has anyone noticed a difference between UK-made Celestions and China-made Celestions? When the move first happened, everyone was afraid of a change in standards, but I still hear a lot of praise for new Celestion speakers.

Andy Sneap did some tests between UK and Chinese made ones - no difference other then normal between two speakers.

If I'd trust anyone's ears, it's his.
