What the hell happened, Guitar Center???

Re: What the hell happened, Guitar Center???

Yep, five. By the time I got there it was mostly bass & Les Paul cases though. Actually I just found something I might not be able to resist in Cerritos- never been to that store before. May report back.

Damn, those are the most useful and lucrative ones dude

Re: What the hell happened, Guitar Center???

A friend of mine went into a guitar center and told an employee “wow this guitar has high action” - to which the employee replied “oh yeah, that’s how we like ‘em around here”— he replied laughing “wtf? Why?!?!”

The employee just stared at him blankly.

It’s funny, they hire these people who obviously have little experience with guitars, and have no clue as far as why some people would prefer certain things. It’s ridiculous. Guitars are a specialty. It is pretty sad they don’t see that and just try to keep costs as low as possible.

And i agree— their selection is getting worse and worse. The special display room, where they used to keep a couple highly prized pieces is now a “used” section with complete garbage. The types of guitars they have the most of are crap so people don’t treat anything of theirs good (like tube amps) with respect and it all goes to ****.

Honestly, back in the day i knew people who would hang out there all day while maintaining a personal policy of “i will try guitars there but not buy, because everything on their floor is essentially used.” I think that’s ultimately what killed their business model. They have so much garbage and now try to pinch pennies any way they can. If you tell one of their employees you would like a setup if buying the guitar from there, they’ll look at you like you have five heads and give it a minimum setup just to shut you up. Guitar center - blah.

I've gotten killer deals from pawn shops. You just have to be patient and know how to negotiate. I've gotten a Schecter stock with Duncan's and a Jackson DXMG with the good licenced Floyd for less than two bills.

Re: What the hell happened, Guitar Center???

I visit any guitar stores I come across when I visit the US. July/August last year I stopped in at the GC stores in Seattle (the one up near Amazon), Memphis, and Lakeland FL. I bought a good mic and a tremolo pedal at Lakeland, but just some other random strings/picks/etc at the others. i found them all to have a decent selection and the staff were all friendly and helpful to me.

A few years back I visited Brian's Guitars in Cheshire, CT - those guys were great. Just recently I visited a few stores on Oahu HI as well - some great stores and great guys in there too.

I try to always buy something in each store, especially the smaller (non-chain) stores. If for no other reason but to keep a few bucks moving through the doors of some places I like to visit, and help keep the honest guys open for business.

Here in Australia, the only stores left are the small guys who buy and sell used gear, and typically have a section of that market that they specialise in (ie, Japanese made gear, or vintage Fender/Gibson). I do love these stores, some great ones here in Sydney and in Melbourne, but if I were looking for new guitars or amps there really aren't many (any) stores left that sell them.

Re: What the hell happened, Guitar Center???

The GC in Jacksonville used to have a ton of used stuff. There for a good while, it seemed the used selection was larger than the new selection.. Last few times Ive been there, the had almost no used gear and most of the new stuff was lower budget, cept for a few Gibbys hanging behind the counter

Hey BR; You know we have a new one in Orange Park? Blanding/I-295 area, across from George's. It's pretty nice. Good selection of new and used.

Anyway, I'm kinda lucky being in Lynyrd Synyrd land. We have two GC's, (one new), as I described above. I'm not sure if they're knowledgeable or not because I never ask them questions. We also have two George's Music, where they know me by name. And we several guitar-centric pawn shops, like Crazy Dave's that have cool and knowledgeable people. That Crazy Dave's is where I scored my Daisy Rock, (effectively a Schecter), with the Slash AII pro's and a nice soft case for a bill.
