What to do with my amp?

Soliciting opinions on this one...

A while ago I bought a Line 6 Spider II 112 combo amp. Right off I started getting buyer's remorse... there were things that just bothered me - I wasn't able to get all the sounds I wanted and I wasn't able to use my pedals (too much noise going into the preamp stage).

After a while I resigned myself to the no pedals thing and learned to program this thing - and started to like it better. I was using it in gigs and started noticing a problem - it wouldn't maintain volume levels when I switched channels - even when I carefully set them before the gig started (in the same room I might add). It just became a giant source of frustration.

Then I stumbled on a great deal on a Hartke 60W guitar head and bought it. I've been using it ever since and absolutely love it (and I can use my pedals again). The Spider is gathering dust.

Should I try to sell the Spider? Or is it worth it to keep it around in case I need a backup amp? or for friends that want to jam with me?

By the way, I have way too guilty of a conscience to ever sell that amp without fully disclosing all the problems I have had - so I probably wouldn't get much. One option I've been thinking about is going back to the store that I bought it from and seeing if they would trade it for something (they sell used gear) - I wouldn't feel bad about that since they sold it to me in the first place.

Thanks for any advice

Re: What to do with my amp?

i would get a different back up amp, or another jam amp. theres no reason to keep an amp u dont like (especially a spider).

Re: What to do with my amp?

Thanks nepalnt21... I appreciate you taking the time to respond.

I guess the reason to keep an amp I don't like is the cost of replacing it.

The question is, do I really need two amps? (btw, I have 2 small practice amps and a bass practice amp - so I have plenty of amps for practice at home)

Do you guys ever feel the need to have a back up amp for gigs. I can gig with the Spider - Ic an make it work. It's not my first choice - but if I had to I could.

If I got rid of it, I probably wouldn't replace it with another amp - not right now, anyway. I might get a few more pedals, or some other toy. I don't know.

Re: What to do with my amp?

Can never have too many amps. :D I have my big mama Marshall, two small practice amps, and a little 1/2 watt DIY amp. Having a backup is always a good thing. I'll probably be lugging my Lead 12 for backup. It can go DI to the board and sound decent if I have to do it, or just mic it.

If you don't want another amp yet, get something else you can use instead.

Re: What to do with my amp?

On the subject of disclosure....

are your problems general problems that all Spider's have? if so, no need to disclose. If a buyer has done their research, they'll already know that they are prone to "XXXXXXXXXXX". (whatever that may be)

If the amp is broke, fix it before you sell it. If it's a minor issue that just bugs you, but others would probably never notice, sell it.

Either way, unload it before the value drops even further.

Re: What to do with my amp?

I always feel sorry for people that buy those Spider amps. The sound cool and great at first, then, :smack:

Re: What to do with my amp?

I agree about not being able to have too many amps. Use it to get a back up if you're not happy w/it.
