What to do with my Les Paul?

I just got a les paul classic and my les paul faded isnt getting that much play. I just found that using hot humbuckers (stock 496r, 500t) with the gain rolled back to like 4 or 5 was the missing ingedient to the sound I was looking for. So i was thinkin of what to do with my faded. Either put some phat cats in it for a different approach or to sell/trade for a 60's reissue strat which is what I've been GASing for. either way I have to have a back up guitar so its either the strat or the paul. what do you say? I'm kinda leaning towards the strat because every rig needs at least a strat and an lp.

Re: What to do with my Les Paul?

I'd trade it if you do use it that much.. How much for the faded in cash? I'm looking for such a critter.. Would you consider a trade?

Yeah, I'd go for the Strat. This way you'll own the two Rn'R Classics :)

Re: What to do with my Les Paul?

I'd personally keep the paul. I love Les-pauls and like to keep a second one in reserve at gigs in case i pop a string.

Well said... especially a les paul with APH-2's or Pearly Gates in it.

Re: What to do with my Les Paul?

I've got just enough money to get my new amp. and I don't feel like saving up 500 bucks more for the strat. My les paul classic's sound beats the faded, so what I'm saying is if I've already got the les paul area covered why not get a strat to have complete versatility. I always feel like I needone for that strat clean/blues tone.

Re: What to do with my Les Paul?

Sell both of them and get an R7! It's worth it. (Assuming that your classic is a usual, and not an outstanding one.)

Of course now you'd say what the hell, this dude is way out ... whatever. Yeah for enriching your tonal spectrum, a strat is a must. So is a tele. What I am saying regarding the R7, believe me the difference is soo big between the non-custom shop LPs and Rx (x=7, 8, 9) LPs. Then again getting a custom made heritage LP with your specs is a very option you should not dismiss.

If I was you I'd keep the LP until such time as the amp is with you. If your "tone" is an LP one then moving over to a strat could be quite a difference. Yes every one should have an LP and a strat in their arsenal but I would think that getting your amp is going to be the priority first here. Afterwards you can thern decide if it is going to be the classic or the faded one that goes - who knows it might be that you keep them both? But trade the one which you ain't going to regret.

And so is this.

I'm mainly a Les Paul guy, but I keep a couple Strats around. If I want the Strat sound, I have it, ya know ??

You've had some good advice here. I guess it just comes down to " what do YOU really want ??? ". ...................:)

Re: What to do with my Les Paul?

I think I'll just keep it around for a while. I kinda wanna put some of those humbucker sized P-90s in it.

Re: What to do with my Les Paul?

and if I come by a strat that I truly like better than the les paul then I will sell it

Re: What to do with my Les Paul?

Led Zep, I live right down the road from you, I just noticed that.

Anyway, I would keep the Les Paul for sure. I have Gibson 500T and 496R that are just lying around with old/worn nickel covers if you need some more hotter pickups. Yes they have covers installed on them, the guy I bought them from installed them on the pickups.

KEEP THE LES PAUL!!!!!!!

Re: What to do with my Les Paul?

Sell both and find a nice Standard and preferably one of the newer models (2002+). I have a 2003 Standard and went though a few before finding this one. I have played a hand full of Historics since getting my Standard and would still take my Standard. I can't see spending the extra for the Historics personally. You can find a good price on a Historic on ebay but then you can't play before you buy. I try to always play a guitar before I buy it but I do make exceptions but always make certain you can turn around and re-sell if you don't like the guitar.

Anyway, I found my dream LP and it is a Standard production model with a 50s neck and I also installed an aluminum tail piece.

If you are like me and don't like Strats one bit, you could get a PRS and get close to Strat tones but have more versatility.

BTW I'd advise to check the highway 1 strats. With some minor upgrades (which don't need any rushing) you could get one for like $600. The wood is good, the finish is sometimes considered superior to that of american series (issues about polyurethane not letting the wood breathe)... Pickups are not the best yet we all know how to correct that particular problem.

I have heard real good HW1's that were kicking american series, and american reissue series ass, big time! All depends on the wood, and the fact that they are cheaper does not mean (in this instance) they are worse. Keep looking till you find a good one!

Yes I would agree getting a Highway 1 strat is a good choice. GC were doing them for $369 not so long ago so have a check out there. I have got one and they are great, good necks, body resonates well, does ding and chipe easily but not as bad as you might think. One thing is that you will need to change the pups. For me they just did not cut through in the mix and started to break up, I found this out when I gigged not so long ago and had to revert back to my other strat.
