What tubes for my JCM2000 DSL401 Combo 40 watts??

It has
Pre Amp valves: 4 x ECC83
Power Amp valves: 4 x EL84
This is my First Tube Amp, sounds good, but theres just a little tiny bit of weakness somewhere. I would like to ask all you experienced valve players, the difference between the Pre Amp and Power Amp tubes, what does what? and.. What modificatons an I do in the tubes to get as closer as I can to get a Hendrixian "Amp sound".
Thanks, Rock n rolll!!

Do a search for a place called Eurotubes. They're pretty good at recommending tubes, though I think they mainly sell JJ tubes.

After you changes the tubes make sure you get the amp biased as well.

To get a hendrixian amp sound, get the Digitech Hendrix pedal and play it through the clean channel of your Marshall- you'll nail the sound alot better than if you tried to change the tube and speakers on your amp.

You do not need to bias that amp. The 20 and 40 watters by marshall are fixed bias.

I has JJ's in mine loved the sound warm but articulate. I did not like the JJ preamp tubes. I like EH pre's in mine.

Umm, sorry but I think that fixed bias is the circuit that's used to control bias in all marshall amps and so on, but i've never seen that marshall doesn't need to be biased. Actually i've biased couple of dsl 20's and in those amps were measuring points already with connectors and bias-pot.

Re: What tubes for my JCM2000 DSL401 Combo 40 watts??

The JJ EL84 powertubes are said to have quite much punch, so you might like to look into those. For preamp tubes, I use 9th Generation Chinese 12AX7s and can get into that ballpark with my TSL.
That said, Hendrix used alot of pedals like Fuzzes, Octavers and Wahs, so you'll have to take that into consideration too.
If you want to take it really far, you might want to get a Celsestion G12M Greenback or G12H speaker.

I agree. The best tubes for a normal price are JJ EL-84's and Shuguang 9th Generation 12AX7's.

Go on Ebay and on the front page, do a search for Shuguang 12AX7, and you'll see some cheap deals on them....like 4 for $25. JJ's will run around $35 for a quartet.

Bob at eurotubes said so as well as the marshall site if I am not mistaken. They can be biased if the desired tone is not achieved but the 20 and 40 watters do not have to be biased

I own the DSL401 once .. I didn't have the amp bias when the tubes need some changes.
A fender customer service man replied me via email that, if you're using the same model of tubes, you need not bias the amp also

I maybe wrong, but if its able to skip the bias process, you can save some money =P
