What tubes in your DSL...

I'm about to order tubes from Doug's tubes. I play SRV to Slash and COC...some Scorpions and DeMartini as well...Love the hot rodded marshall tone.

Anyway, He recommeded the Ruby EL34's, as most people have today, and he also recommeded the 9th gen Chinese R9's...I trust Doug and everyone swears by him and his service. Anyone try these in their DSL?

I'm thinking of getting those, along with an EH, JJ, and GT Mullard, just to see how these would mix with all three R9's in V2-V4. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

I think you're on the right track with the 9th gen Chinese, they are supposed to have some really nice gain tones. As for the Ruby EL34's, I'm not so sure. I've read mixed reviews about them, and based on opinions I've heard here would not choose them for my JCM 800. I would go with the Svetlana Winged C EL 34's for the tones you mentioned. They are super smooth and sweet. Combined with the Chinese pre's you should be set. Annother good set of production tubes are the EH's. I've played those as well.

I think your idea of buying a few different pre's is a great idea. Each amp responds differently, and you may like one tube in V1 and annother in V2. JJ's are much smoother, and sometimes people say a DSL needs a little of that. Experimenting is really the only way to know for sure what works best for you and your amp.

Let us know for sure what you get, and what you think.

atm i have ruby's in my dsl, I will tell ya what i think when i compare it to the JJ's that should be here anyday.

On a side note.... Does anybody know what i should bias the JJ's to on my dsl100? I got the el34's because GJ told me too :wink: also got the GT-12AX7-C because anything GJ says i do.

I use Svet "winged C" power tubes and EH in my preamp. I'm happy...the beast rocks.

There were a few threads on Harmony Central that literally raved about the Ruby's.......

So Chi3f, what are your impressoins of the Ruby's at this time. And it sounds like you have the R9's in your pre's. Can you describe the cleans and overdrive sounds in the various channels??

Yep, Svetlana or JJ EL-34's, and Shuguang 9th Gen 12AX7C's. It does a Marshall good. :laugh2:

yea that's what i thought

edit- in the pre i had Electroharmonix 12ax7eh. The clean channel sounded great but the distortion lacked definition. Now more definition and the clean channel still sounds great. I haven't had it cranked up i gotta wait a while so i am not sure the all in all of it.

Ruby is a company that probably buys from a few distributors, then stamps their logo on them. I can't speak for all, but the Ruby's I've heard were crap and the best sound I got outta them was the "pop" as they hit the bottom of the dumpster.

I'll never understand how many Chinese Pre's sound great, yet most Chinese power tubes are awful.
