I inherited one of these and I want to retube it to give it a killer sound. I play hard rock/funk and blues but not metal. What tubes should I put in? I want to just replace the tubes (no re-biasing or anything).
Get some JJ/Tesla's!!! That amp should have EL34's in it, but if it has 6L6's, I'd get it rebaised for EL34's. If it does have the EL34's, I'd get those, unless you want even MORE headroom out of the amp, which E34L's would do the trick for.

I had my Laney AOR 50w combo retubed (and biased) with JJ Tesla E34L power tubes and ECC83S preamp tubes. They are much warmer and richer than the Groove Tubes that were replaced. Although you mentioned that you don't want to rebias your amp, I strongly recommend it if you're REALLY looking for a killer sound. It will likely extend the life of those tubes, too. :smack:

I'm not a big fan of EL34's. I think their bottom end is overly mushy and as a whole, I just don't believe they're a very harmonic friendly tube. I do like 6L6's though, and I believe that Mike Soldano shares that same opinion. As far as tubes go, Ruby Tubes are pretty nice, but I've always had really decent luck with Sovtek's.
