What tuners/machine heads are best for trem guitars?

Hi.

I want to know what tuners you guys think would be best for a trem equipped guitar (vintage 6-hole trem).

I know alot of people favor the Sperzels but would something like the full size grover locking tuners do just as well?

although I love Sperzels on modern style strats, I prefer vintage style Kluson tuners with vintage trems.

Me too. Not a fan of locking tuners.

Grovers, Schallers, Klusons, etc. do sound differant from each other. The heavier tuners like Grovers or Schaller add mass or weight to the peghead and do affect the tone and sustain to a degree. As for what sounds better, that's a personal thing. I like them all. Some of my Strats have those Gotohs that are like mini-Schallers and some have Kluson type tuners. I think the lightweight tuners sound less steely and let the guitar sound looser and more resonant but that doesn't keep my white Strat with the heavier Gotohs from being my favorite Strat. The Strat I just built, I used Klusons on...I guess I kind of prefer them after all. :smack: Lew

locking tuners of any kind.

Locking, IMO preferably Sperzel.

BTW, for guys like Lew that prefer the tone of vintage tuners, Kluson (or was it Gotoh?) makes a locking version of the classic Kluson Deluxe without extra bulk from thumbscrews. The locking mechanism is incorporated into the post, which keeps vintage dimensions and changes the tone by a nuance at most to my ears ;)

Thanks Odie, those are the ones I meant ;)

yes .. those locking vintage "klusion" style by gotoh come stock on grosh guitars .. and have for quite a while ..they are really nice .. I've been working w/ them alot lately and I like them better than I imagined ... thumbs up!

aside from those .. all the major players are good .. but on strats w/ full sized tuners I keep coming back to the locking schallers ...I thinks its because I like the feel of the thumbscrew.

for heavy trem use without a locking nut, locking tuners are a good idea
