Title should be: MODDED cheapie guitar ... buttdialed something posting off a touchscreen tablet, can't figure out how to edit title

Post what modded cheapie guitar you miss

Mine:
70s Quest ATAK VI
Japanese Matsumoku-made Explorer/Destroyer bolton knockoff
Purchased in LA ~2009 for $95 off craigslist

Stock cool features:
Huuuuuge wide frets, biggest I've seen
Pushpull coil taps on both buckers
Oldskool, pre-rarity dark as night rosewood FB, the kind no amount of money can buy these days
Bone nut? Idk
Hardtail bridge
Tarnished as hell old brass saddles

Mods from prior owners:
Big old grovers

My mods:

Bone nut? Maybe a mod

My mods:
1) On a whim --- bought a horrendous looking mess of an in-progress lefty project strat for parts and experimentation. Pickups went to projects, neck was stripped and oiled, body was flipped, etc... it had the WORST looking, gaudiest-ever GILDED saddles on a normal strat trem bridge. However, on a hunch, I tried em on this thing instead, and somehow it looked... CLASSY. I guess the tarnished old brass originally looked something like that

2) Pickups --- the MMK-45's sounded pretty good, but this thing looked like an 80s shredder... had a pair of DD HB108's (the invader-looking "designeds" with the Duncan Distortion architecture) from a disassembled Jackson RR3 I had bought for $125 in a bunch of plastic baggies, and resold converted to an active-passive EMG+DiMarzio layout, and thought those looked just right

Stuck em in there... DAMN... that thing could WAIL and SQUEAL effortlesly

The ridonculously low action helped... great guitar. Miss that thing

What about you and your favorite ex-axe???

Back in the 70's I found a Western Auto Truetone double cutaway hollowbody with a baseball neck for a bat. Took the 9 pound Bigsby off the thing to start with, and put a cheap bail tailpiece on it. Eventually, refretted with Dunlop 6100's, installed Grovers, a bone nut, a pair of DiMarzio's, and a built-in TubeScreamer. My best friend played it in jazz band at college for 4 years. Had a ball with it. For some idiot reason, I put a Kahler on it during the late 80's. In the 90's I took it all apart and sold or recycled most of the hardware. I still have the TS guts in a box somewhere. Sold the battered husk to some kid for $20. I would LOVE to have it back, it looked so goofy, but played so nice and sounded great.

I spent years modding and hot rodding cheapies. Don’t miss any of them.
