what woods work the best and worst for a JB

I have a les paul standard with a JB, I like the Jb's bite but it doesn't provide a good low end to even out with the highs. is that because its in a mahogany body?? if so, what pickup would give me that same punch and edgy high but with a nice low end to go with it?

Re: what woods work the best and worst for a JB

I don't know about Les Pauls, but the JB is a winner in both of my Jackson Soloists.

One is a MIJ SL3 with an OFR, neck-through, heavy alder body, FMT, maple neck, rosewood board, 500K CTS pots.

The other is a MIA SL2HT with a TonePros TOM, strings through body, neck-through, light alder body, FMT, quarter-sawn maple neck, ebony board, 500K CTS pots.

In both guitars, the JB knocks my socks off. In both guitars, it's got a nice bottom end that never gets rumbly or muddy. The SL3 has a bright, spanky top-end that's almost Strat-like, which I attribute to the OFR's hardened steel construction. The SL2HT has a deep, meaty growl with a nice bite on top and loads of sustain.

I don't know what sort of guitar the JB was designed for, or what others use it in, but I know in these two that it's absolutely the right pickup for me.

Re: what woods work the best and worst for a JB

sounds like its mostly geared toward alder bodies or something similar

Re: what woods work the best and worst for a JB

I'm ALL about the JB in a Les Paul, if you want more low end, bump up the bass on your amp, lower the pickup, and raise the polepieces...

It SMOKES

Re: what woods work the best and worst for a JB

Actually since both his guitars are maple neck through guitars, the JB is going to behave more like it is in a maple body, since that's the wood both it and the strings are mounted too at both ends.

Re: what woods work the best and worst for a JB

The JB works BEST in a maple body guitar (yes I said that correctly) with a maple neck and rosewood board. Just like the old school Kramers back in the day. Ya see, despite popular belief that maple is bright as hell and like an icepick (which it is not and you know this if you have ever actually played maple), Maple has a very focused bass which tightens up the low end of a JB perfectly.

With the JB it is not a lack of bass, it has plenty of it, it is just loose.

I think you just sold me, I want a barreta or striker body from southwest guitars for my plywood striker that has an amazing neck. I think you just sold me on getting it maple, H/neck C, back routed.

then how would you tighten up the bass of the Jb in a mahogany body les paul, add alnico 8 mag?

Get rid of the JB and use something else. LOL!

Re: what woods work the best and worst for a JB

most dudes you see using JBs and liking it are playing Strats or superstrats.

after playing and loving a Les Paul Custom with a 500T in the bridge today, i'm thinking a Duncan Custom might be great...similar wind, same magnet...lots of guys who've been playing Les Pauls forever love either the Custom or Custom 5 in the bridge and now i want to try it myself...

way easier to get a new pickup than to change the wood your Les Paul is made out of :smokin:

Re: what woods work the best and worst for a JB

how would a duncan distortion or an alternative 8?, anyone try those in their LPs before? I just want something aggressive and bite with a nice tight low end..

LP712 - tell us more about your LP, is it lightened or chambered, tell us about the neck and fingerboard too

well its actually for my Lp custom, ebony fretboard, mahogany neck, mahogany body, but not sure if it has a maple cap or if its all solid mahogany....it weighs a crap load so im pretty positive its not chambered.

Re: what woods work the best and worst for a JB

Custom for metal. Custom 5 for rock.

The 59, PG, or Jazz for neck.

Go with this formula on LP's and you'll usually be satisfied.

JB's usually work best in alder, ash, or maple veneer on basswood superstrats.

probably not a JB for this one.

Yeah, from word on the street, it was originally developed to make a telecaster (bright sounding guitar) sound like a gibson. For a Mr. Jeff Beck, which is why the pickup is mistakenly (or maybe not...) referred to as the Jeff Beck humbucker, by musicians friend.

I think it's a similar story for the custom shop EVH (which stands for Evenly Voiced Harmonics according to Seymour's lawyers)

Re: what woods work the best and worst for a JB

I had the JB (covered) in a semi-hollow. The guitar was all maple laminate (or "ply" as the wood is sometimes referred). It did fine, but there was definitely a sweet spot with the tone knob, in this case around half-way or a little lower on a 500k pot with .022 uf cap.
