what woods work the best and worst for a JB

Re: what woods work the best and worst for a JB

I have one in a Tele thinline (actually Warmoth) ash body and it sounds great in there. They are stock in Hamer Studios, which I also have, along with a '59. Sounds good in there too, although I've thought of trading it out for a more Les Paul-like tone, maybe something warmer and more Paf'ish. It's actually really versitile in there though so I've kept it in there.

I have a les paul standard with a JB, I like the Jb's bite but it doesn't provide a good low end to even out with the highs. is that because its in a mahogany body?? if so, what pickup would give me that same punch and edgy high but with a nice low end to go with it?

Are you missing the low end in a band situation, or is it when you're playing by yourself? In a band situation, you'll want a lot less low end than when you're playing by yourself.

As someone who's tried several JB's in several guitars (LP, SG, & 335, all with 250K's), I did not like it in anything, mainly due to the harsh spike. However recent discussions here on putting A2's in JB's got me interested, and I just tried that in an LP Studio. Big improvement. The warm A2 tamed the spike and made it a pretty good PU.

Never give up on a HB or P-90 until you've tried a couple replacement magnets; you do not know what's it's capable of until you do. "Work with what you have", there's plenty of time to drop a lot of money on another PU. To dial in your tone, do it in orderly stages. The last thing you need is to jump into another PU you're not thrilled with.

Try a Dimarzio Air Zone bridge and an Air Norton neck.

yeah playing alone is when I really dont feel like it has not enough bass with the jb..but anyway I just ordered a duncan distortion, I'll see how that works out
