what would be a fair asking price for a used set of P-Rails Hot p'ups

This is hypothetical as I'm considering swapping out my P-Rails for just a straight up P90 in a humbucker slot p'up like a Lollar, Duncan Phat Cat, or Fralin P92's.

Nothing wrong with the P-Rails I just really find I gravitate mostly toward a P90 tone and might get a better P90 sound out of a more specialized p'up.

Chances are I'll keep the P-Rails.

The P-90 in the P-Rails is just about as good as it gets for rich P-90 tone. It's a beefy P-90 tone, to be sure, but it's great. Depending on the guitar, a Gibson P-90 can sound a bit bright.

I personally love the P-90 in the P-Rails. If I were you, I'd just keep the P-Rails. You'll have that great P-90 tone plus three other options if you ever want them. Plus, if you already have them in your guitar, you don't have to do a thing to get what you want.

Wait a minute...I just reread your title.

Do you currently have a set of P-Rails in your guitar, or do you have a set of P-Rails Hot in there?

If you have the Hot version, all you have to do to get that great P-90 tone is to take out the A8 magnets and replace them with A5's.

IMHO, the hot wind coupled with the A8 mags is just too much. But the hot wind with A5 mags works great.

this sounds like something I'd be interested in doing how difficult/expensive would this be to do. ie is it something I could do myself?

and yes the bridge is the HOT version it's not horrid I just wish it had a little more brightness/clarity to it which I think the A5 would provide.

I recently paid Kam 55GBP (80USD) for one P-Rails Hot + a Triple Shot surround.

The mag swap is pretty easy, yes you can do it. P-Rails, like all P-90s, use two magnets (humbuckers use only one). When you chenge them just make sure that you have the mags oriented to repel each other when installed, and both poles (either north or south) are at the same end of the pup.

The first time I tried it, I was as scared as a little girl in a haunted house. But it turned out to be very quick and easy. I now routinely swap mags in just about all my pups to fine tune them to my exact needs.

Magnets cost about $5 apiece and can be purchased from addictionfx on ebay.

Come to think of it, I have a couple spares I can send you. PM me with your address and I'll send them to you. Just promise me that you'll wright back and let me know how it turned out and if you like the sound better with the A5's (I'm possitive you will).

There are detailed instructions (I think they also have pics) in this forum. Do a search and I'm sure you will find lots of help if you need it.
