What would you do to increase the output of a '59N...

I've got a '59 in the neck that I actually don't hate as I would've thought I would. It's not as chirpy and scooped as I remember it being. Hell, with the height set right, it's not even problematically boomy as people seem to think it is on Les Paul types. It's pretty sweet and has a nice smooth, vintage-y character without being too dark or muddy.

... But the output is pretty tame, and I like the EQ balance it has going on at the height I have it set to right now, which isn't too low. Raising it even closer to the strings kinda makes it lose the sweetness that I actually like about it, and the low-end is on the verge of starting to become too much on clean sounds on the low strings. The way I have it set up right now, the output drops on my clean sound significantly compared to my other guitars (equipped with a Duncan Distortion Neck and even compared to the DiMarzio SDS-1), and switching to it mid solo on a lead sound feels kinda dry and a bit hard to get that singing sustain on.

I admit I overall like it, though. It just needs a little push. And I also want to squeeze the most out of it because I got the guitar for a good deal, and I don't want to start dropping a lot of money on it. I got the bridge pickup because I live on my bridge pickups, LOL. But I wanna get the most out of the current neck pickup, especially because I don't hate it.

So... right now it has a cover. Would removing it raise the output significantly? A little but noticeably? Or is it more of a suble thing?

I can get a magnet to drop in. Magnets are cheap. But Ceramic would probably change the chracter radically, wouldn't it? How about Alnico 8? Or would A8 cause the low-end to start getting problematic?

Thoughts?

Removing the cover would diminish eddy currents... which would rise the output level at resonant frequency but might therefore alter the EQing more than the overall volume. Less eddy currents should also make the attack a wee bit faster and peaky, IOW less "compressed".

Some ceramic magnet(s) would increase the output thx to a stronger magnetic field but would diminish the inductance, both factors changing the EQing curve too... unless a low value capacitor would be added in parallel with the pickup in order to mimic the effect of the missing inductance. Not that difficult in theory but it requires some lab gear and tests to avoid a shot in the dark (one would need to know the inductance measured with A5 then ceramic in order to define the value of an efficient compensating cap).

FWIW. HTH.

If you are into mag swapping, you could try a A6. I like it very much in PGB. Its fuller and less scooped than A5, a bit like an A8 with less volume.
