Whats a good match for PG in bridge

Just installed a Pearly Gates in bridge position of a Les Paul Studio.I left the neck position Gibson 490r in.The Gibson pickup seems to be a little hotter than the PG,so I lowered it to even the output.Alsothe Gibson pickup seems to be muddy and mushy when playing through the distortion channel. What would be a good match for the PG a '59 or another PG for the neck?

Re: Whats a good match for PG in bridge

although the '59 and PG are good pickups, here's something i'd suggest you try before you lay down the cash for a new pickup...

try swapping the magnet to an a4 or a5 magnet. those both have tighter lows and brighter highs than alnico 2(which is what you've got currently) with the a5 having slightly scooped mids and the a4 having a more even EQ. personally, i'd try the a4 first since the PG is very mids-centric and you don't necissarily want to have too much difference between neck and bridge EQ-wise. magnets cost $5 here:

Although that would work the cover on the PG is soldered on and wax potted. So I need a match for the PG,Thanx for the advice.

The PGn is the best match for the PGb. If you want something tighter use a 59, but if you like the PG in the bridge I'd bet you'll like the neck model, too.

It takes seconds to remove the cover, soldered & potted. Cut the solder with a dremel, knife, or even sometimes just pops loose with a flathead screwdriver. We do this all the time.

An A5 cleans up neck PU's with A2's. I do it to all my Gibson neck HB's with A2's. They're muddy sounding at first, but once I swap magnets I get clear, articulate tones. You'll learn it's much better to spend $5 on a magnet, than buying new PU's that may or may not be any better than what you have.

Re: Whats a good match for PG in bridge

i think the pg neck is the best match for the pg bridge. i also dont think the 490r should overpower the pg bridge with the heights adjusted. i like my pg pretty high in the saddle on les pauls, less so on strats
