What's a good ukulele?

Re: What's a good ukulele?

the only ukulele that you should be getting is this:

hehe..

scott should know though

Re: What's a good ukulele?

My parents actually had one similar to that once, from Spain. :laugh2:

However, when it comes to ukulele's, I actually like the look of the one I linked to better, it looks really awesome.

Re: What's a good ukulele?

If you've got the bucks, Kamaka is the way to go. That's the only one that Jake Shimabukuro plays and he's the man. I played some from Hohner a year ago (they're called Lanikai) and they were good but not great. The main thing is the intonation. Cheap ukes don't play in tune up the neck. That's a huge drag because it turns it into a toy. It's worth spending a little more to get one that will intonate, because a decent uke is a beautiful instrument and a total secret wepon in the studio for overdubbing. Good luck.

Re: What's a good ukulele?

A Kamaka would be really cool, but I'm not sure they're available here...?? that would be really cool for sure though.. :laugh2:

This is the 'beginner' model I've been looking at, can anyone comment on this: http://www.oscarschmidt.com/product/ou14e.htm

Is it fine for a TOTAL beginner, like me?

Re: What's a good ukulele?

It would be great if you could try it first. Total beginner or not, you need the thing to play in tune or you'll never be able to get into it. That's a decent price, though. Again, good luck!

Re: What's a good ukulele?

I won't be able to try it first, that's the problem. There aren't really any shops in my area, so I guess I have to gamble a bit :(

Re: What's a good ukulele?

The problem is those are not available in this part of the world, I think..God damnit this is annoying, I need one that will keep in tune pretty good.. :(

Re: What's a good ukulele?

Mele has online ordering, call or email them about shipping to Denmark. You got nothing to lose:)

The problem is major taxes being charged by my government when the package arrives, and I'll end up paying alot more than the ukulele costs..I remember when I got my guitar from the states, there was nothing but problems. :(

Re: What's a good ukulele?

How would this model be for a beginner: http://www.thomann.de/thoiw12_artikel-160907.html

Any of you played this? Better than the other 'beginner' i linked to?

Re: What's a good ukulele?

They don't say anything about it on that site, no, but I remember my father helped me investigate it, and basically there's no extra taxes on things when they come from another EU country, but when you ship from the states, for example, the package must not succeed a certain value or else they will claim taxes for both the value of the product and the shipment, as far as I've understood it..I'm afraid of taking chances after what I've been through before, they almost send my guitar back. I guess that for now at least, I'll have to try and stick with the brands available in this part of the world :(

Re: What's a good ukulele?

Mele ukulele's are real nice . The people who run that shop are very cool too. I spent a couple hours in their when i went to Maui recently.

Re: What's a good ukulele?

What do you guys think about that Applause/Ovation ukulele? It comes with or without a pickup..I really want one with a pickup, so I have the possibility of amplifying it (and recording, I think I can use it through my Toneport like an acoustic guitar), and I can also use my guitar tuner for the E,A,G strings right?

there's some guys playing them here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JtdrvkpYNio (I think it's amplified here, does it sound any good? I know nothing 'bout ukulele's..)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WFthzbykgiE (unplugged or just the version without pickup)

Re: What's a good ukulele?

By the way, I read the Harmony-Central reviews which seem pretty good, and one of the reviewers also mentioned that it has "geared tuners", which should be a plus with the aforementioned intonation problems, shouldn't it?

Re: What's a good ukulele?

How about C.F. Martin ukuleles?

I saw a danish shop that carry this model:
http://www.mguitar.com/guitars/choosing/guitars.php?p=z&g=r&m=S-O Uke

It looks like it's really good built quality, but what do I know? What's the general opinion about C.F. Martin ukuleles and guitars?

**this isn't what I'm looking at for a beginner, but possibly something I could wish for christmas or later.
