whats all the buzz about?

hi all, if you have read my posts recently you know i purchased a lefty agile 3500 and upgraded it with SD jb/jazz combo. the sound is great the feel is great bla bla bla..but i have 1 issue...if i strike the low e string i get a buzzing that i dont get on any other string and frankly its killing me. in order to fix this i a) adjusted the truss rod to make the neck a bit more downward sloping (which i assume raises the action slightly) b) raised the low e side of the bridge slightly c) slightly raised the nut just on the low e string. after all this still have a discernable buzz on the low e string, much more so than on my other guitars (peavey predator plus and mex strat). any ideas? i have looked at the neck and it does not look at all warped or anything. also, thought its very hard to tell by looking, i think the ring comes from the string hitting the 4th fret which to my eye is no different then any of the other frets. HELP i love this guitar and need to have this sorted out. is there any way for me to file down the fret just a bit where i beleive the e string hits it? finally, someone told me that les paul or les paul type guitars may have more buzzing due to the length of the neck being shorter...is there anyting to this. thanks in advance for the advice.

Re: whats all the buzz about?

thanks, i guess the next question is, is there anybody on the board that can do this for me or knows someone in the ny/nj/westchester/long island area that can? since joining these boards last week i have really come to trust the members here and figure it would be a good place to start. of course whatever is a reasonable rate i will pay...thank you.

Re: whats all the buzz about?

I would look around to find a good tech in your area. It's nice that you want to give your business to members of the forum, but you have to remember that the cost of shipping the guitar makes that a bit impractical. I know JohnJohn and Theodie can do the work, but neither of them live near you. I've done leveling work, but I wouldn't consider myself a pro luthier, and so I usually just work on my own stuff.

Regardless, I'm not convinced it's a fret issue, especially if it happens when the string is played open. It's possible, but the more likely scenario is that it just needs a proper setup. Find a good luthier in your area and have him take a look at it. He'll be able to tell you what the problem is and how it can be fixed.

any takers? before i head out to the guitar center or hit the yellow pages i'd like to know i exhausted this option first....

Re: whats all the buzz about?

before you go for a set up do a simple little test - pluck the string while pressing your finger just behind the saddle at the bridge - I've had a couple of LP style bridges on other guitars develop buzzes due to the string saddles being a little cheap and not made very well, it caused a strange vibration (as you have mentioned). If dampining the string a little behind the saddle eliminates you might want to try replacing the saddle in the bridge.

He's not cheap, but Doug does tech work for some BIG names and comes highly recommended

He's in Vista (westchester county on the CT border). I used to live right up the street from him.
