What's better than a '78 in a 2010 Gibson Les Paul Custom

I have a concurrent thread asking about a RR1 with a BW or Nazgul, vs an Invader.

My question here is:

My favorite so far in my 2010 GLPC is a Seymour Duncan Custom Shop '78. This is after a transplanting and recording direct (re-a ping) a few other pickups amazing pickups such as the RTM, '78, PG, Gibson stock crap, etc. anybody found a more magical choice along with a EVH 5150 iii amp and 4x12's with greenbacks? The sound I'm going for is this, so anything better would be...?

If yeh equipment you are using is the very sound you are going for, then there is no other answer for this thread.

I think making a change in a guitar you already love the sound of generally results in a sideways step, or something worse. Hoping for 'better' isn't really a good enough reason to change unless the 78 isn't doing something you want.

Re: What's better than a '78 in a 2010 Gibson Les Paul Custom

You just told us it is YOUR awesome sound.

Now - to me, the '78 (Custom shop or not) is a 'meh' pup at best in that custom. See how that works? I have a whole list that would sound better for ME.

But since we are talking about YOU....

Re: What's better than a '78 in a 2010 Gibson Les Paul Custom

I was never more disappointed in a pickup than the ‘78.

I’m curious as to what you guys didn’t like about the pickup.
I was actually entertaining the idea of contacting Duncan about ordering one....

+$55 for a 1% overwound Slashbridge

And Idk about custom shop, but regular Duncan definitely winds +/-3%, maybe even 5% accuracy, making the number kinda moot anyway

Just wasn’t anything special about it. I got sucked into the hype and ended up with another bland A2 pickup. I should have tried an A5 before selling it though

I love that pickup in a Strat style guitar, killer harmonics. But that was “The” sound I was going for. Never even thought of it in a Les Paul.

Re: What's better than a '78 in a 2010 Gibson Les Paul Custom

So one thing I found in owning multiple les pauls is, one pickup may be very different from one LP to another. So if your current combo works , don't change it. Now, if you have another LP, then you may try something else in it. It has taken me time and money to realize this. I do prefer A5 pickups and that has come about over time. Although I have a set of PGs in a '79 custom that is just as sweet as can be. I have put them in other Pauls with not as great of a result.

Never played one. Don't care to. It's a slightly overwound PAF style. MY killer tone in that Les Paul is either a Custom, a Distortion, or a SuperDistortion. So you can discuss every PAF on the planet, but until you get to around 14/15k or more, and a5/Ceramic I'm not about it.

I'm sure a lot of people dig it. I even have a 9k Pearly Gates that may be somewhat similar. But if that zone is what YOU are all about then rock on.

Yeah the CS prices are killing me

Yep, we all have our preferences. I am curious, what is your neck pickup choice? I tried the Custom once and it wasn't for me, but again it could have been that particular LP. I do like the EQ curve on the DD and in that LP I have a StagMag in the neck with Triple shot rings. the DD is a great pickup and I get along with it, but it is not my high gain axe. for high gain, I go with Vintage output A5. 90% of what I do I am on high gain. Now traditional Power Tube gain, DD all day long!!

Yeah, I also prefer something hotter.
I had heard some YouTube vids and they sounded great but who knows what kind of post production was done.

You and I have very similar tastes in a lot of musical things. Lol

There is more to a wind than turn count. The '78 is a lot brighter and grittier than a Slash or an A2P. A Slash can be described as mellow, where in most cases a '78 cannot.

Is it more in line with a PGb? a '78 is a 9K A2, right? Now you got me thinking and thats gonna get me into trouble.

In my DD LP, I happen to have the original 79 T-Top.
In my SuperD LP, a DiMarzio PAF

In my Caddy’s:
Custom w/ PG
PG w/ PG
JB8 w/ Duncan 103 Performer (basically 59)

For a DD in general: 59 or Jazz, depending on use/guitar

for a Custom, I prefer a PG

Re: What's better than a '78 in a 2010 Gibson Les Paul Custom

I prefer low-gain pickups in my Les Pauls. I left the BB 1&2s in my Historics; even kept the '57 Classics in my Elegant. But, the 496r/500t sets in my Les Paul 1960 Classic got yanked for a set of Antiquitys in one and Custom Shop Seths in the other. And in my Supreme, production Seths work beautifully. Couldn't be happier with the changes I've made, but also the stock pickups. Every guitar has a purpose.

I don't need or want hot pickups...the Mesa amps I play have more than enough gain on tap.

Bill
