What's FLO

On the Denver G3 ...what's FLO and Kovax in regards to Vai?

The guitar with EVO written on it has Evolutions in it.
The guitar with POGO written on it has Breeds in it.

Re: What's FLO

Wow Chris Thanks for the site and info!
Looks like #43 wire has found it's way back in to my heart and soul this weekend (for other reasons, not just the Evolution). The Evo bridge PU is either imbalenced or hybrid...any ideas? DC resistance of each coil?

Thanks

Re: What's FLO

Jesus Christ!!!!

Yea man…see ya in a couple of months. (LOL)

Thanks…Saved in favorites.

Re: What's FLO

SOooooooooooooo sorry!! It's POGO that has the Breed pups, not FLO!!
Temporary brain fart.

I should've double checked!

According to DiMarzio's catalog:
"If you've seen Steve Vai perform in the last few years, you may have seen him playing a Jem guitar with the word Pogo taped on the face. Steve wanted one of his instruments to have a fat, classic humbucker sound to contrast with the hotter, screaming Evolution®-equipped guitars. This is the bridge pickup we developed for him. "

Re: What's FLO

I haven't seen the Astoria yet but on Denver FLO and the triple neck have a neck pickup with one blade coil and one hex.

That's the Sustainer, in the neck position ...

Re: What's FLO

Twilight, To the sustainer issue…okay…cool…DC resistance and wire gauge? Also it is labeled KONX…what does that mean? Not trying to put you on the spot…just a tone quest.

Re: What's FLO

Hey man…gotta come clean here…grew up listening to Terry Cath, Jon Ackerman, Duane Allman, and John Coltrane (Pat Martino too but his tone and Terry Cath's is irrelevant here).

I'm an old greaser but most metal cats think I can shred. I grew up in the woods and attended many Black funerals where everyone sang like Aretha Franklin.

In fact the last Black funeral I went to I could not believe that, that art form is now lost or rather on Aretha's and the likes vibes on vinyl to carry it forward...babe you know your getting old when...you see something like that replaced by the diluting of race...no predidujust intended.

I've spent over 10k on digital junk. I still use dig on my clean tones but am not willing to compromise on my distorted tones any more. Tube distortion is so beautiful. It is a natural phonama.

Vai pissis me off with his over prossing of distorted tones (yeaw...I just made a lot of friends). Yes, bourbon in hand I write this (liquid courage).

Have Berhinger 3216 board and thanks to my pea brain cannot even produce sound bite worthy of posting.

Anyhow, my quest is Duane's Fillmore tone. That WCR guy is almost there, but his pickups aren't balanced.

The Fillmore neck and a JB or DD bridge works or a Fillmore bridge with any vintage SD neck pickup works but the two (IMO) shouldn't be in the same guitar.

Dude's close but he either needs to under wind the neck (which is like a Screaming Demon) or...okay as Evan says can't give away the secret sauce, the bridge.

Vai is a closet Duane freak. I've heard him quote Duane for more than 20 measures (don't believe me…I'll tell you exactly where to go in my next post).

Vai's tone quest spans 4 different DMZ pickups…all the same conclusions I've come up with in trying to achieve Duane's tone (thinking I'm a Duane freak, my style is kinda a combo of those guys I mentioned earlier and McLaughin...well wanabe).

But look, you don't have to be a Duane freak to be looking for that in between tone.

Any one caught in between a C type and a JB/DD is there. Please take note that of the four pickups Vai influenced three are dual resonce or as SD refers to as imbalanced. This could also mean hybrid.

I guess the conclusion I've just come up with is if Vai wants to mask his tone and not divulge the real tone of his guitar (LOL)…well I guess I gota go buy those pickups and find out if…well is the cat a closet Duane freak that nailed Duane's tone (LOL) or…or…somebody please build me a bridge pickup...please(LOL)!

If any one understands what I just said please start your next post with Amen brother.

Hey I have no problem with posting while drinking  however just because Vai doesn't have Duane's tone is no reason to bash him.

Here's a thought: instead of chasing Duane's tone, find your own voice! :13:

I think that Vai labels his guitars according to sound, so he knows which ones to use for which tunes. I don't know much abotu KONX, but he does use that one a lot for sustainer work, I have noticed.

Re: What's FLO

the KONX sticker is on EVO on the neck spot.. i HOPED to see him before the G3 gig in june '04, but the folks i was with thought getting there EARLY is silly, so i couldnt ask him about the KONX thingy

Re: What's FLO

KONX is just what the neck pickup on EVO is labeled.
