What's the brightest and punchiest sounding speaker?

I'm looking for a very bright, clear, tight and punchy sounding speaker setup to balance a dark sounding amp

I was thinking of maybe an X pattern V30/G12H 4x12?

Re: What's the brightest and punchiest sounding speaker?

The G12H was a miss for me. I liked the G-12T75 better with 2 V30's but that was toning down a bright DSL. The G12T's sound a bit brighter to me so you might wanna hit GC and try your amp through a regular Marshall 1960 with 4 G12T75's. and see what you think before investing.

Re: What's the brightest and punchiest sounding speaker?

Really? I always tought that the G12T sounded much thicker in the mid department

They do however sound very clear... Which might actually help too. I'll give the Marshall a try.

Re: What's the brightest and punchiest sounding speaker?

The brightest Celestion, IMO, is the alnico blue G12. It sounds great in an amp like a 50's Fender 5E3 Deluxe, which needs a speaker with strong highs and lows. In an amp like that or a Vox AC30 it's very vocal sounding.

I don't hear the G12H30 as being overly bright - it's one of my very favorite speakers of all time, as is the G1265.

The Vintage 30 is fairly bright and might seem to lack some deep bass in an open back combo amp but in a sealed 4 x 12 cab it has a lot more bass and that changes the frequency balance or ratio of bass/mids/treble, so that it's not so bright sounding as it is in an open back cabinet.

Interestingly enough, the Vintage 30 was designed by Celestion to try to get the tone of an alnico blue G12 alnico using a ceramic magnet. They don't sound similar to me though.

In any case, the G12H30 & Vintage 30 combine beautifully in a 2 x 12 combo amp. I haven't tried that combo in a sealed 4 x 12 though.

Re: What's the brightest and punchiest sounding speaker?

The Celestion G12-80 Classic Lead is very bright and punchy, with very little coloration of the amp's signal.

Eric Johnson used to like those. I've had them in a JCM-800 50 watt combo amp. To me they sound a little less "British" and a little more "American". Maybe 50/50. I guess that's another way of saying they don't color the sound as much as a typical Celestion. They're not my favorite Celestion but they're still an excellent speaker. There are other Celestions I like a lot better. Truth be told, the Vintage 30 and G12M 25 watt Greenback are not my favorite Celestions either - not by a long shot. But if those were the only speakers Celestions made I'd happily use them.

Re: What's the brightest and punchiest sounding speaker?

Classic Leads are okay, but I love me some Greenies. I think I like my cabinet to fatten up quicker than a 240 watt V30 cab could, or a 320 watt Classic Lead cab.

But the CLs are bright for a high powered speaker. For me, the magic happened with two V30s and 2 Greenies in an X.

However, I'd be pretty interested to hear what 2 greenies and 2 G12h30 would sound like. That would be a bright, crunchy cab, but with just a hint of warmth...

Re: What's the brightest and punchiest sounding speaker?

Vintage 30s can actually smoothen things out once broken in. I also have a 1x12'' cabinet w/ a Classic Lead 80 and it is definitely on the brighter, tighter, clearer end. It takes a lot to get speaker breakup from it. Bogner chose it as a default for their 1x12'' combos due to the power handling. It's a good match for the Shiva, but I still prefer Vintage 30s (they have a warmer thing going on with more speaker breakup). G12H30s are good speakers, but they will naturally breakup earlier (only 30w compared to the 60w of the V30s). They are brighter than Vintage 30s and they have an extended lowend, which may be to your preference.

I've tired that combination with some old 2 x blackback G12M and 2 x blackback G12H in my Marshall quad and maybe it was the age of the speakers, but it sounded a bit too dark and unrefined. Perhaps if they were new speakers they would fare better.

I've also tried the G-12T75/V30 x-pattern and it also wasn't to my liking. The laser beam highs from the 75s were still prevalent.

Now I'm sportin' a G12H/V30 arrangement and it's by far my favourite. A great combination of warmth and clarity.

Consider the Eminence Delta Pro 12A also. Very punchy and no tone coloring side effects. You will get absolutely no speaker breakup from this speaker.

Re: What's the brightest and punchiest sounding speaker?

what ever fender uses in the twin reverb, its everything that annoys me about the brite fender sound.

Isn't the EVM12L's also extremely transparent/brite with ZERO cone break up ?

Being a higher out-put speaker, i feel the Celestion GOLD is even brighter than its little Blue cousin.

I am also not a fan of the V30's even though Slash made them sound good in his GN'R days.

Re: What's the brightest and punchiest sounding speaker?

today I had the chance to play a marshall g12t 4x12 and a marshall g12h 4x12

now i'm even more undecided ugh

The G12H30 are definitely tighter and clearer, but the G12T75 feel much more 'singing' and 'musical' to me

Re: What's the brightest and punchiest sounding speaker?

brightest and punchiest that I'VE TRIED and OWNED and not just read about or heard in a clip would have to be whatever Genz-Benz puts in their G-Flex cabs. The metal grill doesn't hurt the brightness either, but those are some high performance speakers, whatever they are.

Next bright and punchy, that I've actually tried and owned, would be a '93 Bogner 412 with V30s (one of the very first Bogner cabs. 1st, 2nd, or 3rd one, not sure).

Next, again, that I've actually owned, would be a Marshall 410 with Fane speakers.

My current cab is the darkest I've owned (Bogner puts a water heater blanket in his cabs), just to contrast the above and add to (actually, subtract from) your X-pattern idea. It is a Bogner Uberkab with V30s and 75s in an X. Punchy, balanced, but not "bright".

I think you can get brighter and punchier than this: "I was thinking of maybe an X pattern V30/G12H 4x12?" Because to me the X-Pattern thing is about a more balanced sound with more frequencies coming out.

I'm interested in a 112 cube with a 100 watt Sugarcone in it....

Those are Eminence speakers designed for Genz Benz. I don't know if they relate to any readily available Eminence off the shelf but they are beasts.
