Whats the cause of dead frets?

I set my action nice and low on two Jackson guitars I have, but on both there are a couple of dead frets. If you raise the action high, the dead frets go away. On one, a neck thru Jackson DK2 guitar, all the frets play well except the 2nd and third frets, where all the strings are dead and bottom out. On the other, a Jackson style neck-thru, its plays well except for the last thinnest string which is dead on bends at the 8th fret only. Im hoping this is an issue that can be fixed by maybe a fret file?

Re: Whats the cause of dead frets?

you have a couple frets that are lower than the others, if you bring it to a tech he will do a grind and polish and bring the higher frets down the height of the lower one

or your neck could have a slight twist or some other issue but chances are its a low fret

Re: Whats the cause of dead frets?

You will probably need to have it prof. set up. A lot of people think you can adjust the action by cranking down on the trust rod, but all it does is gives you half of a neck to play when your done.

Re: Whats the cause of dead frets?

Dead fret are also known as "Strat-itis beacuse of the chronic problem they have with dead frets on the high frets of the low strings.

Re: Whats the cause of dead frets?

that could be a different problem. if there is too much magnetic pull on the strings youll get weird wolftones and not much sustain. if you have a dead note, its probably a bad fret
