Re: What's the 'CRUNCHIEST' pickup for an LP?
In my experience, the pickup contributes to crunch as much as the amp and speaker. I've done shootouts with several of my guitars and discovered this.
And the guitar construction contributes to it also. I have a Hamer Artist Korina with a 59 at the bridge. That guitar has a semi-hollow double cutaway body. Sounds nice. I have a Hamer Monaco Elite Mahogany, also with a bridge 59, and it sounds far crunchier. When I first heard that guitar I thought it had to be a Custom or even a Screamin Demon at the bridge. But hte stock pickup is a 59, and it does have the output and clarity you'd expect from a 59. In a thick, solid LP body, even a 59 sounds like a crunchy beast.
The crunchiest Duncan pickups I've heard, due how to their aggessive mids make an overdriven amp sound, are the Screamin Demon and the Full Shred. I haven't heard of too many people using these in LP's, but I'd imagine the results, certainly with a Screamin Demon, would be great. A LP would mellow the highs a little, the Screamin Demon would tighten the low end, and both together would contribute to an aggresive, crunchy midange.
